Hi Nigel, the best advice I can give is if your after a pair of good boots, go to the likes of Cotswolds and they will measure the size and shape of feet, they will then recommend what make of boots would suit you.
I had thought about a pair of Meindl but they seem to suit a broader foot, I've narrow feet so they advised me towards Asolo boots, and I've loved them from the word go.
I'd listen to what they have to say.

Grab a set of Lowa, all full grain leather and built to last, pretty much all of their models are in your price range.

I too am a narrow footer, but still love my Meindls, try them all on, if the shit fits, wear it!  Cotswolds staff are great  ;)

Scarpa's always get a good name for price / quality. I still like Brashers, especially their Hillwalker GTX.

I'd second Cotswolds for advice too. They're a good bunch, plus don't be afraid to ask for discount rather than shopping online if they have the item you want. I'm all for a bargain but at the same time it does no harm to support local businesses. Can't try a jacket on at Amazon ;)

Anyone got any other comments to make re boots. Im hoping to get a run down to cotswolds tomorrow evening to pick up a new pair.
I have a pair of North Face something at the min, after 2 years they are looking the worse for wear and letting in water. I have covered a fair bit of ground in them though.

My advice is to get a full fitting done at Cotswolds and base your choices first and foremost around the size / shape of your foot. Features wise most brands are interchangeable, but they do tend to differ in their fit / the last used. Anyone who tells you "Brand X are the best!" because it works for them is an idiot.

I discovered the Scarpa mistral fit me very well in the past, I now wear the Scarpa Cyclone as the Mistral were discontinued and the Cyclone use the same last. I'm on my third pair

All good advice above as each one of us have different shape and size of feet.I would tend to agreed about getting a fitting to see  suits you.Indeed cotswolds is a fine shop with some very experienced staff but don't overlook the other shops as well,Jackson sports for one  ;D

I had leather boots for years and now have fabric.  I'm unconvinced about fabric.  Comfort great but waterproof ness- could do better!

That is my problem too, I'm also unconvinced about fabric. The ones I have are really light and comfortable and I did big distances regularly in them but I didnt have them that long before I started getting damp coming in despite treating them regularly as per the instructions. Will see what they have if I can get down tonight.

I'm also unconvinced by fabric boots. I had a pair of Scarpa Z65 GTX fabric boots and I always felt like they leaked above the foot. Now I wear Brasher Hillwalker GTX leather boots which have never leaked.

+1 for the leather folks, my current pair of boots is very comfy and was very cheap by comparison. A pair of Karrimor ksb orkney with full grain leather all round including the upper liner. Waterproof up to and including standing in running water to your ankles, and as supple as silk from around 3-4 wears. When these eventually wear out I will invest in a more expensive pair but cannot forsee me ever buying boots not complete leather, if I am wearing boots it is generally because I am out taking my leisurely time and so I do not need any real breathability in footwear. That and no amount over over engineered fancy tech fabrics can come close to the waterproof capacity of a well cared for leather boot, they simply don't fail.
