knots???

when i watch all the ray mears and the like you always see him using different knots and until this morning i could only tie my shoes, but thought it about time i learnt some more and started practising  a  Mooring Hitch, turns out its handy enough but my Qa is how many knots does everyone no and use and what they use them for

Buy the collins gem book of knots to start you off.
Then learn a Bowline, Sheepshank and a Truckers hitch. Will cover 80% of what you will need. I'll look up a list of the books i've used and post it up later.

I'll add a few more knot tutorials. I've did one for the constrictor and bowline. :)

thanks for the tips. what the  Stevedore Knot
 bet one used for tarps  above my hammock?

Its a stopper knot, like the other two. It would be used for stopping a rope or line pulling through a hole. So to stop your rope pulling through a loop, add a stopper knot to prevent this.

so far i've learnt the figure 8 (and some variations) clove hitch, italian hitch, alpine butterfly & bowline, use them all for climbing, its one of those things that if you don't find a use for you'll forget it, i'd like to learn that one used for hammocks that was mentioned on the bushcraft course, anyone remeber its name?

i dont do any climbing so dont think i will learn that many knots, but it is something i would like to try but never have the time for. I do hope to get to a bush craft course this year, is there many running?
