Learning new knots - The Overhand

Learning new knots tutorial - Part 1. The overhand

The overhand knot is a stopper knot, used to prevent a cord or rope puling through a hole, such as the end of a string of beads. This is the most basic of knots and is the foundation of more complex knot.

1. Prepare your rope
1

2.We form a simple loop in the rope.

2

3.Then we pass our "working end" (This is the end which the knot is being formed) through the loop. Note that you pass it under the first part of the loop, and over the second.
3

4.Pull your knot tight and adjust the position of the knot accordingly to the desired amount. An overhand knot is formed.
4

We have now made a overhand knot, this can be made bigger by turning it into a double or treble overhand knot. This may be required if the overhand knot does not stop and simply passes through the hole.

5. To do so, simply add another loop in the knot before puling it tight.

5

The same step can be used to create a treble overhand knot by simply forming three loops as opposed to two. These knots can also be called blood knots, rumored to be used in the Cat-o'-Nine tails whips.

More knots to come. :)

until recently i hated knots, which is unusual being a scout leader, but after doing a bit of rope climbing and therefore finding practical uses for knots i'm starting to like them  :)  hopefully we can do some lashings at the next camp Oisin and then we can make some furniture  ;)

Nah... The Underhander is when you get some one else to tie it for you then claim it's your own...
