Planning on heading around the wall this month, partly wanting to test out some lightweight kit and also as practice with some navigation and pacing work. I'm intending on getting in a one day blitz at it later on in the year and making this one into a nice two day walk.

I'm planning on parking up in silent valley then working my way anti clockwise around from there, making my night camp up on Commedagh, and day two from there.

Due to work and other things I will be doing this mid week. 15/16 July, but if anyone wants to meet up for awhile or happens to be in the hills on those days they are more than welcome to join me for a chinwag and such. I'll have my viewranger running so can be found easily enough with the buddy beacon on there.

Alas, I'm not off midweek. The wall in a day would be too much for me but the last time the NI-Wilders did a 2 day hike a clatter of us met up the 2nd day and walked from Annalong to Meelmore. Was a cracking walk.

Hoping for some help with a small niggle I have. I'm on the fence about carrying an extra water bottle for this on the chance it's a hot sunny day. Normally I just carry a 750ml water2go bottle and this works fine, provided I can find some form of water no matter how muddy or dank I am set as it will be filtered. I have checked on a 1:25,000 map and seen there are lots of small streams around the route, however with this weather I am a little concerned many will be dry.

For those folks with more experience of the Mournes than I can you tell me just how dry it is up there at the moment? I don't need good clean water or even clear, if it is wet and I can squeeze out enough to fill the bottle it will be perfectly fine. At the moment the extra water bottle add 1020g to my pack weight which is a hell of a lot if I can be safe enough to find water on route.

Streams aren't too bad at the moment, could change by your trip date though, do you have grid refs of we're you think you intend to top up? Just in case I'm in the area I could check them out, or you could even do water stashes

Tricky to give grid refs as it will heavily depend on the weather on the day. Though I was probably looking at the following places for quick pit stops.

Annalon River

Rocky Mountain - The river to the east of the mountain around the 350m mark.

Bog of Donard - Stream just before the brandy pad style.

Commedagh - The pipe on the top

Hares Gap - The map shows a small stream that comes down Bearnagh on the north side of the wall, failing this there seems to be a steam coming down Bearnagh just south of the north tor.

Meelbeg - The saddle between Meelbeg and Loughshannagh shows a stream coming down both the north and south sides of the wall.

Muck - Between muck and Slievenaglogh there is a host of streams that form part of Yellow water and Miners Hole river

Silent Valley Reservoir - any of the various streams around the silent valley region.

I'm hoping that should be enough for finding constant sources of water. Though I did spot a few other stream outlets between those points, although all this really depends on how the weather is between now and then.
