Dundonald Ice Bowl - Clip-'n'Climb
« on: February 06, 2014 »

Has anyone been to Clip'n'Climb at the Ice Bowl? I was reliving my childhood doing a bit of skating last night and noticed that the outside of the rink now has a load of climbing walls and a rather funky drop slide. Has anyone been or had any experience of Clip'n'Climb? It seemed expensive at £15 or so for an adult.

Yes I was there shortly after it opened and would recommend it even if your not into climbing. Definitely a good night out.

I've been a couple of times with youth groups so have benefited from a group rate.  I found it really enjoyable.  The walls are all done up in a novelty way using a load of different materials.  The have information on each climb as to how it can be made more challenging e.g. using only red holds.  Some of them are quite challenging.  A few other fun climbs have side-by-side climbs with a timer so that you can race someone or just the clock.  Another section has back-to-back climbs with a see through board between them so you can race each other face-to-face.

It is great for the kids because they can do it themselves with minimal supervision and the adults accompanying them can also have a go.

It sounds like good fun. Maybe we should plan a quick trip.

Believe it or not.. I work at the ice bowl  :) it's very popular and I have to say I enjoyed it when we had a staff day climbing before it opened ... Also, I'll let you into a secret that not many people know.... We do a deal in conjunction with clip n climb  ;) £10 for either Bowling/skating or indi ... with a session in clip n climb, from Monday to Thursday ... So it's 2 activities for 1 :) considering its £15 alone for the climbing .. BARGIN .. And no I'm not trying to promote lol I'm just helping my fellow NI-Wilders !

Great info, thanks. Is the deal only during the day or in the evenings too? I'll be there next week skating, would be tempted to sample the climbing too.

Exactly polroger  ;) ive a feeling clip n climb don't promote it very much due to the price and not getting as much money.. But trust me it's viable  :)

Just ask for it at reception as you go into our main building . You pay for it there .... As for times I will check tomorrow evening when I am there and get back to you

Took the kids to Clip n Climb at Dundonald yesterday (Tue 18th) and had a great time.  Self belay was a bit scary on the first descent but the system is brilliant and a good variety of climbs.  Both my daughter and I took on the "leap of faith" however the wee lad bailed.  Too early in the session and his confidence hadn't been built up enough.  Only down side was there was no special offer.  £42.50 for 1 big kid and 2 small with 3 leaps.

 ???Jonny, what happened!! ???

£42.50 for 1 big kid and 2 small with 3 leaps.

Seriously, that's a hell of a price. I would say that it’s prohibitively expensive.

Yeah, there's no way I could pay that for me and a couple of kids. I'd seriously be expecting half that price.

It's a lot of dough all right.

My advice would be to go off-peak; for those of us working that essentially means going on a week night.  The other thing I would say is that the selection of climbs are sufficient in themselves and the leap of faith could be missed out (saving £2.50 pp).

That would give prices as follows:

1 adult x £12 ea
2 kids (assumed age 6-16) x £8 ea

For a total of £28.

Think of it as a one-off or rare event and it doesn't sit uncomfortably alongside trips to the theatre, ice hockey, NI games, Ulster Rugby, karting etc.  Some of those last longer, but it is all relative to the activity, half an hour is plenty for Clip n Climb.

Some other things like the Zoo, W5 and Exploris compare favourably to all the above.
