Bothy's (Bothies??)
« on: August 26, 2009 »

too cut a long story short I'm planning on joining the MBA (Mountain bothy association) as I quite like the whole idea of the bothy culture, however this is not the point of this post, does anyone know of any bothy's in NI (excluding the Salt Isalnd one) As looking at the MBA webby only ones on the mainland are mentioned. I'm pretty much hoping that some one will have heard tell of a few round here that arnt cared for by the mba and hence wouldn't be on their map. Or does ni and ireland have its own both association?

there's one at Dunseverick, but it's in a terrible state.

Bothies work well in Scotland where they're remote and hard to reach. In Northern Ireland any that there were would be vandalised beyond recognition in the first year by dickheads.

Where is Dunseverick?

It's a ruined castle on the north coast.

ture enough jonno, its just such a shame that thats the case tho. Immagine a few bothies round the mournes you could do so much with that kind of shelter there, especially the likes of us climbers, it would eliminate the need for a monster tab in carrying all that hardwear!

Would be good in the thick of Annaghlong forest or donard wood out of site so it couldn't be wreaked.

Go for it. Honestly there is no better place to "learn" hill walking than the mournes. Get yourself a 1:25000 map of the mournes and a decent compass and look up how to take a bearing online then hit the mournes for a day, if you do manage to get geographically misplaced you'll be able to oriantate yourself no probs because there will always be three peaks in sight (assuming its not misty!) and if all else fails your pretty much gauranteed to hit the mourne wall at some stage and presto you found your way home!
