Last minute wild camp!!
« on: April 21, 2013 »

Well this we night under the stars was so last minute we were there before we new we were going.
Due to a change in our weekend plans at 2;30 on friday the son (only in from school 5mins) and i decided to have a frantic half hour running around the house getting all our pruck together for a quick foray up into Annalong wood the weather was to be very good so it would have been rude not too.
Parked up at Carrick Plant and off we went. you all know the drill straight up the path and 30mins later hey presto home for the night. Had the place to ourselves so decided get the camp sorted and have a quick dander up to Blue lough and a bit of an explore around and over Percey's whats his name? Killed a couple of hours scrambling around and we think we found the cave more of a wide crack maybe we wernt in the right place never been there before!! headed back down to camp when it started to get dark (head torches are a god send) to get the burgers on and a bit of a fire going and that was us settled for the night, a bottle of red and a few tunes on the old ipod and it wasnt long till we were pushing out the ZZZs. All in all a great night that happened so quick we nearlly missed it.  No pics sorry forgot the camera.

Dont know how wise we were wandering off and leaving the tent and all our gear for an hour or two we thought it would be safe enough and it was.  Has anyone had or heard of any bad experiences doing this???

Glenn.

Nice one Glenn, as for leaving the tents, probably more chance of something happening to your car than your tent  :)  here's a wee tip if leaving valuable, dig a wee hole nearby and bury them, cover hole with bogroll, they'll be safe  ;)

That's the way to do it mate.

My 2 boys and I done a recce of Annalong wood a few weeks ago in preparation of their first ever camping trip. Planning on heading there sometime in early May.

Enjoyed your summary. Cheers.

@Liam. Good thinking mate I wouldn't be delving in anywhere where there was bog roll topping. Lol.
@Yak. My birthday turned out to be the reason all plans changed we were meant to be heading down to the van for a quiet one but her indoors had other ideas mainly a surprise party on Sunday so after a few white lies about the daughter going to a party on Saturday and us not going to the van she actually suggested going camping should have caught on then that something was up.

@Wolverine. Get it done the kids will love it try and keep them away from the black burnt trees or they will end up as black as your boot. Keep us posted on how you get on and take plenty of pics we all love pics of trips.

Great stuff. I've left (and see gear left) up in the Mournes plenty and never heard of any issues but I suppose you couldn't discount it. I'd bring any expensive but small stuff along with you and maybe hide your ruck a bit of a distance from your tent covered with leaves or branches just to be extra safe.
