Glenveagh National Park
« on: August 25, 2012 »

Thought it was about time i posted this little family outing.
Glenveagh and the Derryveagh mountains are in central Donegal.

Even the drive out in this part of the country is great. Plenty of parking at the center but a bus runs up to Glenveagh castle from there.  You can walk but the bus runs so regularly that it would probably spoil the walk, one thing about tourism sometimes less is more which was raised about the giants causeway recently on here.

The information center in Glenveagh is blended into the landscape, and cannot be seen from above because of the green roof.  There is a cafe  :P and some information about local wildlife, deer, birds even ticks and other insects.

Leave the car park and center behind and you know your in for a treat when hit with this view.

Glenveagh castle has some nice grounds, formal gardens and short forest walk.

This is the usual tourist area with medieval archery displays and birds of prey on some days you would need to check this in advance.

All the birds were rescue birds that where not suitable for release so i felt better after this news. :D
This is undeniably beautiful but touristy, but walk farther than the castle... past the last bus stop  ::) and even although it was the busiest day i have seen here only a few venture farther.

The Track is a great walk up the valley with spectacular views that may take alot of effort to reach in other parts of the country.

Easy access to a great part of the country, my wife and two year old daughter were able to share this with me with no problem.  My verdict is, fantastic family day out (watch them like a hawk in case they head to the lough) but for those looking for a challenge there are plenty of other opportunities in this part of the world.

If you like you can keep walking up this valley past the waterfall to slieve snaght, dunlewy and errigal but it's not a family trip. ;D

Myself and the wife and our 2 dogs were up there a few weeks ago, it is a lovely place. We shunned the bus and walked from the car park to the castle, then on past the lake, the waterfall and followed the track right up through the valley to where it meets the road. Myself and my brother are going back in September/October to do some of the ranger guided walks to see the red deer rut.

They are a border collie and a labrador, it takes a lot to tire them! Although i did have to stop half way home and check on them in the boot because they were so quiet and i thought they had died! ;)

Nice pics and wee video.  She's a good wee walker.  There's nothing like getting them out an about.
