My weird campout at Kilfeaghen!
« on: May 20, 2012 »

Hey everyone, okay just going to share this story with you, it's 100% regardless and I want you to share you comment and opinions on what happened with me! :)

Alright, so it was a very warm morning last summer, my mate Jaime asked me was I up for camping around noon, I said yeh and literally just grabbed my gear and went out the door! we met up with my other friend Scott and headed to kilbroney.
We got dropped of just outside the park, had no idea, where we were going.. they thought it would be an ''adventure'' and that it was.
We walked up to the big stone, and further on past it, we took a break up at it admiring the view on that baking afternoon, I seen a massive radio mast tower and thought we'd go that way, but oh no the boys wanted to go another way.. long story short, they took us around the perimeter and ended up not far form the mast in the end..
We were desperate for water, all that sun and walking had dehydrated us, and the 3 litres each didn't seem to do the job! we spotted a river and a forest, so we headed that way.. at this point we were in Kilfeaghen itself.
It was getting late so our only option was to head for the forest and campout near it for supplies.. not in it of course as we know that isn't allowed for reasons unknown but anywho.
We set up camp, everything was dry but there were on and off showers.. lit a fire, which had caught on to the surrounding and burnt my shoes :C
Once we had it under control we enjoyed our supper under the stars..
We hit the hay and got everything in the tent.
BUT OH NO! remember I said it was a last minute thing and I walked out the door?
Well how silly of me and these lads. we ALL forgot our sleeping bags!!!!!
Luckily Jaime brought out 3 blankets as he had planned them for himself but was kind to share (unprepared.com)
They were as thin as a sheet of paper.. luckily we had them.
Once we rest, I hear the single, most scariest noise. EVER.
It was some sort of vibration like noise, extremely hard to describe! it put sheer fear down out backs, we each tried to pretend it wasn't there and that it was a sheep on the mountain.. But I highly doubt a sheep could literally go outside the tent and wiz of 50meters away and back! it seemed to be flying all round the show, bloody scary!
I finally said '' You here that lads? ''
'' Oh yeh, its just a sheep bud, go to sleep, your tired ''
I said back '' Man that is no sheep. ''
''....I know''
At this point it was rather freaky, the forest beside us was the scariest thing I've ever seen! like something from a zombie or alien movie! look at the images attached on what it was like!
This noise just kept coming outside the tent and disappearing further and further away, very strange and unexplained even to this day we still talk about it..
I plugged my ears and just went to sleep hoping I'd wake up in the morning having not been abducted before that!
In the middle of the night I woke up to water dripping in the tent. We were at a very slight slant on the hill and it had never rained so much. water was seeping in very very fast! covering us! completely freezing, thought I may have died of hypothermia since I hadnt even had a sleeping bag!
After constantly waking up in the middle of the night, morning came about us and it was covered in fog. we could only see 1meter infront of us, ridiculous
Due to ourselves being soaked and realizing just how unprepared we were we decided to give up.. once out of the very low fog, we appeared into the sunlight again.. cant believe it, one minute its soaking and foggy, all we could want is heat! the next, its roasting and all we want it to be cool and have something to drink..
Overally it was a good trip, regardless of how unprepared we were!

Well thats the story.. If you have any ideas to what that noise could have been please leave a comment!  Any strange experiences yourselves? post em!
Cheers! :)

No way, sounds pretty fun! you had the deer to guide you haha
But oh no, this didn't sound like an animal at all.. more mechanical, I will try and find a tune of some sort that sounds reasonably similar!
heres a pic of what the forest looked like right behind us! didn't help at all.
Exactly like that..
Not my image, not even sure if its real, but thats what it looked lile

A "drumming" (displaying) snipe? They vibrate their tail feathers in flight to make a humming sound.

Listen here (top left of page) and ignore the "chip, chipping" call which they don't always do...

Sleeping in a strange dark forest can spook just about anybody out and the noises you hear at night can seriously play tricks with your mind.

I would also be guessing that dehydration, exhaustion and near hypothermia might not have helped:

Altered Mental Status
A side effect of severe dehydration is confusion and unconsciousness. A person in this state needs emergency medical care. The person with severe dehydration will have a low blood pressure, a rapid heart rate, possibly a fever, extreme weakness and mental confusion.

Mild hypothermia
The early symptoms of hypothermia are often recognised by a parent or carer. This is because hypothermia can cause confusion, poor judgement and a change in behaviour which means the affected may not realise that they have it.

Exhaustion
A hallucination occurs when environmental or surroundings, emotional, or physical factors such as stress, medication, extreme fatigue, or mental illness cause the mechanism within the brain that helps to distinguish conscious perceptions from internal, memory-based perceptions to misfire.

sjh1 I must say it did sound something like that, but it was extremely loud and instead of little bursts it continuously went on for 3minutes straight at a time
And yeh Dowser that really couldn't have helped us at all haha
but I don't think they would have caused us to hallucinate, not all the same things or time
It may well have been those birds, I've never heard anything like it, my friend is still convinced and has actually come to the conclusion that it was a UFO hahaha

Rory, check out this video...

Snipe can be quite loud and often 'drum' in the evenings or at night. Often they're high up so difficult to see (especially in the dark). They make the noise by diving with their tail feathers sticking out so they vibrate in the air.

I'd never expect such a bird to be around the mournes
There was no real tree land apart from that dead forest next to us, covered in jags!
Do they usually go out and fly at 2am?
Sounds similar, was over a year ago but I still remember

Snipe are reasonably common (although declining) in Northern Ireland in open boggy areas, they're not a woodland bird. They usually display at dusk and I've heard them in the dark before.

Below is another bird that I bet many have heard but just not realised it, the grasshopper warbler. It usually sings from dense cover so is rarely seen but also reasonably common in scrubby areas (song starts about seven seconds in) ...

I like the German(?) name here, Feldschwirl, I suppose it means Field Whirl, good name!

I think the snipe sounds quick similar to it
I'm glad I posted this up because now I have a much better idea on what caused it rather than assuming complete mystery

There is nothing wild about this apart from the visitor...  I was in bed and my two children in other rooms, about 2.30am on me lonesome, i heard strange noises downstairs  .. panicking, i ran down the stairs, grabbed a clothes horse (for protection  ??? ) when i went to the kitchen there was a beautiful vixen munching on my dog's dinner, who had come in through the dog flap... she came back several times about two years ago.... but we never seen any since... :(

LOL I bet that would have been very scary!
Well I'm not going to mention here and sound like a complete creep, but in my past I've had horrible experiences in a forest land which doesn't help! Well it's kinda blanked out now
But its good to know nature was only with us that night and nothing else..
Apart from that rain! lying soaked in a tent with no sleeping bag, breaks a man
