activity holiday suggestions

Hoping to take the scouts away this summer for some sort of activity holiday, any suggestions as to where we could go that would keep them entertained? especially if the weather is the usual summer crappiness. Cost will be a big factor in this and we don't mind roughing it a bit  :)  I'd prefer something in Ireland as its a small group so ferry costs could be prohibitive, but in saying that, I do fancy going to Wales (no i'm not taking them on Crib Goch  :o )

What about organising something around these guys http://www.theadventureteam.co.uk/

They can go to your location or take you to a specific location.  Coasteering, Archery, bouldering, abseiling, raft building, orinteering and Mountain biking.  Based in Gortin in the sperrins but I think they have an office in the north coast now as well.

Whats your budget Liam?

I know I've went to crawfordsburn and its a great spot. It would be one of the cheaper options,

Also Lochgoilhead in Scotland, is absolutely superb, great centre and staff but it would be at the dearer end of the budget.

You could easily just pick a great location and run the activities yourselves, depending on what permits your leaders have. Crom castle is a favourtie for our troop. Although it really is wild, no running water or anything. So a real back to basics.

Not sure what the budget is yet, will have to chat to parents and you can guess what they'll say  ;D  some scouts are in the same family and that would be an extra burden on them.

They do the wild camping each year in the Mournes anyway so I want to take them somewhere with organised activities and proper instructors. Would like to go outside NI for that holiday feel and further south for better weather  :)

Thats always a problem.

Scout Centers may be your best bet. I know it was never much more than petrol&food&activities which from what I can remember was a total of something like £200 for the week. You can always borrow their equipment too and run the program yourself, providing you have know how etc.

Or if you want to completely leave it to someone else and travel a bit then a Scout centre across the water may be a good option. We went last year to lochgoil and that was our 3rd visit there http://www.lochgoilhead.org.uk/

We had a full week of activities (2 a day), 3 hot meals a day and accomadation. Great spot, because the instructors runs everything. From what I remember it was something like £300 for the full week, although I wouldnt have a clue what planning went into that and what not.

was gona suggest Kanderstag (very well connected with the scouts) then i seen that you were not looking to spend loads :-(
just back from a snowboarding holiday there, loved it :-))))))))))))))

When i was in the scouts as a scout we did an international camp every other year, spain, france etc and did loads of fundraising. There was a few that went for nearly nothing after all the work they done, but anyway, this year we are heading away with the group to TOE. We only have a small group and we had the same problem with parents not wanting a massive bill  :-\

problem is there's so many people fundraising now for so many worthy causes what chance have the scouts got of getting a free holiday!  the snowboarding does sound great though  :)  but i think we're looking at £250 per person as a budget
