what sort of distances are involved ?

A rough estimate would be 30km bike, 10km run/walk and 2-5km kayak. All of this will be broken up you won't do the full distances at once. There are normally special tasks throughout the race which takes your mind off the distances. Also options to cut parts short etc.   Faster teams normally have bonus loop options at the end.
