So... Someone told me that condoms are an integral part of a survival kit. Discuss!

A lot of people do add them to their survival kits. The problem is they are not strong enough to carry a lot of water though filling them with any amount is difficult unless you gave some running water. It's like the survival tins people still rave about, I have never had one I don't see the point u won't have it with u when u need it. It's better to learn about how to use nature rather than rely on items. Just my opinion.

I have heard the old one about the sock before Lenny. Try filling a condom with water from a river while it's in your sock. Believe me Mate it dosent work. You would be better off soaking your sock and using that to carry water! Lol! The other idea that gets bandied about is stretch the condom by adding gravel or soil into it before trying to fill it. This dosent work either the condom just bursts. I think it's an old army thing about using condoms. the big question is how do u now purify the water if you do manage to collect any in your condom? I have actually read books which say once you collect the water in your condom pour water into a metal container to purify it by boiling. Am I the only one who sees the mistake. Lol!

PS... If you blow it up first this stretches it to quite a size and makes it easier to fill from a flowing river or other water source. It is definitely better than having nothing in a survival situation. I'd rather have half a litre of water on my person than none at all!!!

I have had a look at quite a few issue survival kits both British and US and I have yet to come across a condom in any other than those which have been made by the survivalist fraternity. O have tried what the claims say and found it to be inaccurate. Maybe I'm doing something wrong?

I do know from reading about military combat and survival condoms were used to protect weapon barrels from flooding until the companies designed caps which remove themselves with the first round.

I agree with GF; trying to fill a condom from still water would be very tricky.

Although strawberry ones for extra flavour is a great idea Liam

What about ribbed ones for extra grip

So... in short, we could conclude from this that it is all down to how well you handle your condom- sorry Liam!

The whole idea may be just to make the army feel better about having to supply its employees free of charge with safe sex,

Strawberry ones may be better, or possibly ribbed but they may end up ribbed anyhow after as they sit inside your socks!

Some may need a blow first, but empty into a handy metal recepticle after to sterilise water (the question is why aren't we using that then)

I now feel truly enlightened! Thanks for the education

Minty ones with water could subsitute mouth wash.. ooh and then there is chocolate flavour and pina colada.. think how much weight you could lose of you didn't have to carry alcohol and treats..
The glow in the dark ones could save carrying torches.. think we are on a winner here!
