This is a topic which is oddly both very simple and quite complex.

Lots of great information in this thread, interested in the ViewRanger app and OpenStreetMap, to get an idea of GPS and how i would use it before forking out serious cash for a dedicated device.

Depends which model. I have the lower end Dakota 10 model. It doesn't have a micro SD card slot, electronic compass, barometric altimeter and unit-to-unit wireless transfer whereas the 20 does. None of those features were worth the £60 extra IMO.
They are both touch screen, which may not be to everyone's taste. The new eTrex models seem to have more internal memory with the ability to expand.

If you use Garmin's compare feature it should help choose :) https://buy.garmin.com/shop/shop.do?cID=143

From what I've seen from fellow geocachers Garmin appears to the GPS of choice.

The satmap active 10 is the daddy

I had a play about with the one in Cotswolds; flippin' amazing! It had the OSNI mapping on it and looked great; bit on the large side though. Both in size and in price  :o

i'm now edging towards the garmin etrex 30, wonder if it will be released in time for my birthday next week   :)

and just spotted this https://buy.garmin.com/shop/shop.do?cID=209&pID=67686 , might be useful so others can find me when i'm lost, can't justify both items though  :(

bit the bullet and bought myself a Garmin eTrex Vista HCx off ebay, £120 incl postage, not exactly a bargian price but it had a few extras, hopefully it will do the job

Nice;  I've had a lend of that model before. It is very good; has some nice features my Dakota doesn't. A big one being extra memory capacity and it beeps when you reach your destination i.e. geocache  :D It is a rugged bit of gear; would certainly take a few knocks with no trouble  :)

If you want I'll send you a Pocket Query of caches to load onto it  :D
