NI-Wild Salt Island II - 4-5th June 2011
« on: January 31, 2011 »

Hi guys

Going to see if we can get this trip sorted this year.

The idea is we go over to Salt Island on the 4th June stay in the Bothy on the Island (£60 between 10 people) or camp and then back on the 5th.

I know it is a long way off and lots could happen between then and now but if you have a interest in going please let me know.

Thanks

Lenny

Yeap, I'm there... even if I have to swim over this year in a pair of Speedos!!! Twice the wind stopped us last year.

Camp or Bothy..? Let me think about that for a second... CAMP  ;)

I'm up for this assuming the weekend suits closer to the time. Worth pointing out that Killyleagh to Salt Island is quite exposed so wind is a big factor as to whether you can safely make it out or not. As Dowser said, we tried twice last year.

Should also point out the obvious that this is an extremely difficult trip for anyone who does not actually have a boat. Maybe Lenny would include a list of people who do and do not have their own transport.

I have a Canadian Canoe but I'm assuming someone has already called shotgun on my spare seat.

Coming from Killyleagh it's about 1.75miles to the Bothy side of the island, or just over a mile to its closest point. You can also leave from Delamont Country Park but it's a pain in the bum.

It's in my diary...

However Squirt is due end of June, so it's difficult to commit this early in the year...

i ll line myself up again for this one ,i think bad weather last year caused the cancelation ,will look into being able to launch my speed boat at killyliegh again . last year the club members ok ed it .jus wondered wat mooring up at salt island is like overnight ,is it sheltered etc . if not will have to borrow a canoe , or small rowing boat ,something that can be pulled up the beach .has anyone got knowledge of such info regarding overnight mooring?

Salt Island is surrounded on 3 sides (E,N,W) by mudflats making the island hard to get on/off except around high water. The south side has a rocky shoreline and is accessible at all times, but then you have to carry all your stuff across the island to the bothy side. I'm not aware of anywhere that you can moor offshore but I do know it's a popular spot with sailors so there's probably some way, maybe just anchor.

I'm up for it, but I'd need a lift... shotgun on a free seat.  "Have arms, will paddle" ;)

We should just spend a night on Rough Island... at least we can walk there :D
