Ulster Way Challenge
« on: October 09, 2010 »

I've been meaning to do the complete way for a number of years now (http://www.walkni.com/ulsterway/) so have decided to do the full 1000km over the next 15 months bit by bit whenever I have a spare evening or weekend here and there. I intend to cycle the sections that can be done by bike (e.g. the North Down coast).

Is anyone interested in joining me? Preferably someone who is happy to cycle the sections which can be done by bike and also someone with a car as it means a car can be left at the end of the section being done that day.

Great. Welcome aboard! Where do you live MG1? I was thinking of doing the first section from Holywood to Scrabo by bike. I've done this before and its quite a nice little jaunt.

I'd be up for a few sections. Ulsterwalker did it the year before last, all in one go over 30 days.

I'm a bit miffed about the "New" Ulster Way.  I regularly (well, used to regularly, its been awhile now!) cycle the section between Helens Bay and Helens Tower which I believe was signposted as being part of the Ulster Way.  But looking at the maps on Walk NI it would appear this is no longer the case?  It now seems the route doesnt even go to Scrabo but instead continues along the coast to Groomsport, and then down the Peninsula to Strangford where it picks up the Lecale Way.  I can only assume that disputes with landowners regarding access has rendered previous sections of the Ulster Way unusable?  It also means some 180 miles are "link sections" following roads...

If we are to follow the "New" Ulster Way then I'd be up for cycling the coastal path from Holywood, through Bangor and out by Ballymacormick Point to Groomsport to tick off a section :)

There used to be "No Cycling" signs along the Bangor coastal path, but these now seem to have been removed and there are new signs encouraging cyclists to be wary of pedestrians.  So I assume its now accepted we can cycle between Bangor and Holywood and I cycled this route fairly recently.  That said, the old folk still wave their walking sticks at you no matter how slowly and courteously you pass them...

I doubt you are meant to cycle Ballymacormick Point from Ballyholme to Groomsport, but again I've done this quite a few times and as long as you are courteous to walkers then its not a problem.  The problem is navigating the vast quantities of poo that irresponsible dog owners neglect to pick up...

Well said SM. Agree 100% with you there.

Guys - How does Saturday or Sunday 23rd/24th sound for leg 1 Holywood-Groomsport? Any takers? Can also do during the week next week as well if it suits better.

Hi Sawyer, I'm trying to get a few people together to do the Mourne Way this Saturday coming for a walk and camp.  Do you fancy joining us to tick off this section of the Ulster Way?  Thread is here - http://www.ni-wild.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=1466.0
