Hi,

Heading for the Mournes on Sunday - have been to all the major tops on a number of occassions with the exception of Shanlieve and Eagle. Any suggestions as regards a route up to these two - I believe that the area around Shan Lough is very boggy and difficult terrain. Thinking that the best approach would be from Deers Meadows via Pidgeon Rock Mountain..

How this isn't too late for you but:

How about doing it from the south that way you can walk along the top of the cliffs and get a fab. view of the Great Gully, which is up there with the Devil's Coachroad IMHO...

Park either at Attical GAA club at the bottom of Sandy Brae, or if you are feeling cheeky drive on up it and park at the top, it's probably private farmer's grounds, but it's big enough for several buses to get parked and still allow Farmer Brown to get up and down the lane fine. Follow the path to the left before crossing the ford (like the polite sign says), then follow the track as it zig&zags up the hill to the left , once up on the ridge (do not cross the Aughnaleck River) follow it along the length of the cliffs. You will come across the Great Gully about halfway up. Then either hook around to the left to do Shanlieve and then Eagle, or do Eagle first and Shanlieve, returning to Eagle before finally dropping down to Winy Gap and following the river down the valley back to your starting point.

Alternatively you can walk up the first then back down along the cliffs, but I find the 'surprise' of the Great Gully is more from the top...

Hi Chuck. Thanks for the reply. Unfortunately, I only saw it after I'd done the walk so muct go again and do your route.

Headed up Sunday morning early (first car at Deers Meadows) and followed Batts wall up onto Pigeon Rock, Slievemoughanmore, Eagle and Shanlieve. The early cloud covering moved away to give us great conditions. Have done a fair bit of walking in the Eastern Mournes so was nice to see the other side. Contoured around Slievemoughanmore on the way back to avoid completely retracing our steps and got some great views down into the valley for our efforts. Very enjoyable all in all.

Trying to do all the mountains in Paddy Dillon's 'Mountains of Ireland' book - just 2 of the Mournes left to do - will get a wee bit harder after that as the drives will be getting longer!

Looks like a good trip.  I've that "Mountains of Ireland" book as well, but I'm yet to do any of the routes... intentionally at least!  Might make a start on them...

Thanks for the kind words.. The Mournes really are a smashing place to take pics - the proximity of the mountains means there are great viewpoints in all directions. I've added a few to the group - wasn't aware of it and nice to see the other pics!

That book has become my bible to be honest - done 41 of the 212 mountains on it so a long way to go! I don't stick to the route in it to be honest. Stuck a blog of my efforts to date up at http://climbingirelandsmountains.blogspot.com/ - still havent' gotten round to finishing the last entry or adding the Eagle/Shanlieve walk on there.

hi chuck, i just bought the mapyx mourne 25k map and i'm wondering how do you post the maps up like that? Because when i try to screenprint it i have to zoom out to get the whole route and then i loss all the detail.

a little bit of photoshop trickery...i do print screens of each section of the root zoomed in..save them as seperate images, then tell photoshop to merge them together into one large image
