Sorry you feel that way nightjar.
I feel If we're heading out we never force anyone to walk at a pace they are not comfortable with and we will almost always organise more than one route to the same place for the guys who would prefer less ascent/distance or simply a more leisurely jaunt.
Your always going to get different levels of fitness within a large group so its inevitable that there will be guys at the front but I'm confused as to where this idea of a "forced march" came from!?

The ' forced march ' comment is a figure of speech. only. I can keep up with your pace but on the one time I went on a night walk there was one person who had to turn back after less than 1k.

My idea is simply to have a walking group who will take it to the pace of the slowest members.

I am also suggesting that the walks are not necessarily up and down hills, and will appeal to an older group than at present.

I'm not knocking your idea, or meaning any offence, but I thought there were plenty of walking clubs who were generally of an older age group and do everything from gentle strolls in the park to days in the Mournes?

Part of the NI-Wild appeal for me was the fact that it is different to the traditional walking club - slightly younger group, fewer cups of tea and will have a go at most things ;)

This is an outdoor forum for those who like the great outdoors. I see no reason why there cannot be several different walking groups which appeal to different tastes... The idea is to give people more choices.

Why limit ourselves ?

Philip

PS My own preference (today  ;) ) is to create a small walking club with around a dozen or so members.

One of the newest walking clubs is the Belfast Dynamos on meetup .com  I used to attend but 30 to 40 people on a walk doesnt do it for me

Go for it, I'm pretty sure that's the point of the site. I just got the impression that something had properly offended you and was trying to calm the situation!
I'm pretty sure though that if someone had to turn back after 1k, it was something a bit more serious than the pace of the walk.

The forum is open for you to try to organise any event u want - so use the forum to do that.

Though I think it's fair to say you were over the top in your forced march comment and it's Stalinist connotations.  I've found the groups on events very considerate of everyones abilities - whilst still retaining a vanguard that want to go at a faster pace.

If you feel I was over the top then thats ok. It was a throwaway comment so let it go.

I have no desire to get into personal criticisms of anyone.

I simply want to organise a walking group...

It's weird how walking groups and socialist parties can be linked (given enough wine).

The socialist world gets nowhere - mostly over splits about stupid differences whilst they have the same ultimate objective.

Ni wild - doesn't have enough members to have a split!  So we will have to organise at a higher level to see as many forum users as possible can get out there and have a bit of crack.

So maybe we need to rate the outings as easy/moderate or hard then -" the ramblers - united - will never be defeated (or split)."

I will stop now!

I can certainly sympathise with that point of view.  I remember bumping into a club on an outing whilst walking the Brandy Pad.  Must have been around 20-30 people!  Personally I do enjoy walking as part of a group, but I can think of nothing worse than bustling around the mountains with a whole gaggle of people.  It would be like high street shopping on a Saturday afternoon!

I was also on that walk we were by no means spriting up cave hill. Belfastman turned back of his own free will as he was feeling unwell.

What a load of balls nightjar, you seamed happy enough to continue and finished the hike.
