Title: Christmas Dinner and Camp 2014
Post by: RedLeader on November 11, 2014
(http://www.ni-wild.co.uk/images/Christmas-camp-2014-Large.jpg)

What : Christmas Dinner with all the trimmings
When : Saturday/Sunday 20th/21st December 2014
Where : Annalong Wood (http://www.ni-wild.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=3791.0) (Secure parking at Carrick Plant Hire)
Who : Everyone

So you've sat around an open fire, maybe toasted a few marshmallows or pushed the boat out and cooked a steak on the campfire? Well if you think that's outdoor eating then you're in for a surprise when you get yourself to the Christmas Camp.

A full turkey dinner with all the fixings, washed down with hot mulled wine followed by a variety of desserts and all accompanied by the pulling of crackers under trees festooned with fairy lights and infront of a roaring fire - that's how you eat outdoors!
We've had a Christmas dinner in the Mournes every year since 2010 which each time has without exception been the highlight of the outdoor year. Everyone brings a part of the feast, complex foods are prepared at home for heating over the fire, simpler foods are cooked up there. We all scurry around a huge campfire organising our own portion of the meal which is then served to all who have joined us. When the main course is done we tuck into Xmas pudding, mince pies and anything else that thoughtful people have brought and we have a merry old evening infront of the fire listening to festive tunes and giggling into the night before retiring to tents and bivvies for a relaxing nights sleep.

If you haven't tried it then you haven't lived - join us and you'll be sitting at the table on Christmas Day looking at the turkey and remembering how much better a Christmas Dinner tastes when you're eating it round an open fire with likeminded friends.

There's plenty of room to camp but if you want to come for the meal and head home after that's fine too.
As usual, all suggestions welcomed!

Reply to the post to be added to the list and remember to say what you'll be bringing for the meal!

Here's last years thread.

I will like to go to this. Perfect date as I am off that weekend, so I don't have to book it off anyway.

Would anyone driving thats going consider giving me and possibly my brother a lift from newcastle bus station to carrick little carpark and the next day back to the newcastle bus station. I would pay the £5.00 over night carpark fee for doing so.

I will bring down christmas crackers.

I would love to attend this as I will probably be arriving a few days earlier in Belfast from Germany. This would be perfect to get some stories and tips for trekking the country after.

How would I be able to get there from Belfast? Is there public transportation?

I would definetly bring single malt :D

Just back from ASDA (other supermarkets are available) and I have officially started collecting for our Christmas cheese board. Don't worry I've checked the dates! Lol

You'll be missed chum, i'll raise a mug (or three) of mulled wine in your absence.

There's a bus from Belfast at the Europa Hotel bus station, service numbers 18, 20 and 37 which will get you to Newcastle bus station. I'm sure some-one could arrange to pick you up and get you up to Annalong Wood, may cost you a few drams of that malt.

I'm all but 100% on this. Will confirm for definite next week. I'm looking at maybe making a multi day trip out of it, dropping off my contribution (probably a bottle of Jura single malt and some christmas cake bars) then tooling around the mournes for a day or two before joining everyone for the christmas dinner. After a few days of eating dehydrated ready meals the christmas dinner will be like manna from heaven

I don't know any of you guys and it looks like this is a kind of annual reunion? I've never camped out in winter because it just seems so pointless with 16 hrs darkness unless for something like this. Do newbies fit in and whats the routine - presumably u'd set camp afternoon, any organisation to this, what time does feasting start? I can cook and bake but not sure if weekend before Christmas is good. C.

Hi sandman, this proves to be the only thing I can get to each year. Last year was my first outing and I had the same thoughts as you, but everybody was really welcoming, chatty and a good laugh. I arrived when it was already pitch black, put up my gelert solo between the trees and mooched over for a chat. Asides from them being a really friendly mob, there was a great big fire to keep warm around with logs and large stones for seats and even festive lighting- dancing is optional.

Update!
Much as mulled wine is an integral part of any Christmas dinner, it's probably not as important as say, potatoes ;) We're running the risk of ending up with lots of mulled wine and Christmas non-food stuff but without actually having a complete meal. If a few people could club together to make a bit of mulled wine and everyone else looks at the food list it would be much appreciated.

We really need food > mull > non-food (discounting LandyLiam who has awesome Christmas lights)
If anyone's worried about the extra weight that food can be for these sorts of numbers then just post in the thread and we'll make sure someone helps you carry stuff up.

Update 2!
If anyone's wary about this being their first outing, don't be worrying. You can expect a warm welcome and everyone has been in the same boat at some stage. However, it is going to be winter (Sunday 21st Dec is the official start of winter) and whilst the last few years have been mild and dry, there are no guarantees. I wouldn't recommend anyone comes that hasn't camped in winter before or that doesn't have proper winter gear! If you are experienced with winter camping and have sufficient gear to ensure you can stay warm and dry in all conditions then plough on up, it'll be great.

Also!
We're going to shake things up this year and have a few competitions with prizes, more details to follow.

Finally!
One of those prizes may or may not be for the most awesome Xmas hat, you'll get loads of fun ones on Ebay or Amazon at a low price.

What time is the meal gonna be roughly?

It's probably going to be about 7ish.  You know what it's like.  By the time everybody arrives and sets up camp then gets their grub warmed through at the fire it could be any time from 7pm till midnight lol.

Say, 7pm at the earliest and 9pm at the latest.

Grand, the reason I ask is that I'm aiming to be there for about 2030, and if it was from then onwards I could bring something food wise?

I am not 100% if I can make it in time, but is it possible to get an affordable? taxi cab from Newcastle to the carpark leading up to the meet?

Taxi costs £12.00 there and £12.00 back. Anyway its no bother. If anyone can't give a lift.  then we will get a taxi. But I rather pay £5.00 for the persons carpark fee than £24.00.
It already costs me £7.60 odds to get to newcastle and the taxi from my house to the bus station is about £5.00.

So I already spent alot of travel costs.

To get a taxi at newcastle.
Taxi (From House to Bus Station) £5.00
Bus (From Belfast to Newcastle) £7.60
Taxi (From Newcastle Bus Station to Carrick Little Carpark) £12.00

Total: £24.60

Return Journey
Total: £24.60

Grand Total £49.20

To me thats expensive coming up to christmas time.

To get a Lift at newcastle.
Taxi (From House to Bus Station) £5.00
Bus (From Belfast to Newcastle) £7.60
Carpark Over Night Fee £5.00

Total: £17.60

Return Journey
Total: £12.60

Grand Total: £30.20

Savings £19.00

Like I said if there is nobody giving lifts then I will just get a taxi.

Think I'll get them to deliver the Turkey to save me carrying it up  ;D

Dr Who, you've done the right thing in exploring the options.  I suppose most people won't know what their plans are for the day yet.  There could be kids Saturday morning sports on, people could be doing last minute shopping in the morning of the camp, some may plan to do a bit of walking before it and stuff like that.  I'd raise it again closer to the time.

Dr Who there's alway the Mourne Shuttle Bus (AIMSS) which I believe is £5 each, not a big saving though. If there's a few from Belfast it might be worth his while bringing you the whole way. Peter might even want to join us for dinner  :)

http://www.ni-wild.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=4554.msg49578#msg49578

I'm sure you would have no problem getting a lift back on Saturday, as whorya says best check a few days beforehand as its hard to commit at this point, I certainley have no idea what time I'll be going or how many i'll have in the car.

I'll bring Xmas Cake and Cranberry. Not sure if I'm going to have time to mash anything though if someone wants to pick up the potato mantle.

There are 34 people on the list, that number may grow or shrink. With that in mind, if anyone wanted to bring extra of any the foodstuffs, especially meat it would be appreciated or else it might all get a bit Oliver Twist.

I've just picked up the extra ham. Cancel the bacon slicer fourman, maybe upgrade to thinly hand sliced lol!
So that just leaves the mash.

Nice one... Super Ed saves the day!!!

Just need someone to claim the mash and I can trawl the web for another lame graphic  :D

Cheese and crackers are squared away along with continental meats. Hard, soft, fruity, plain, mild and strong. Plenty to keep people busy.

Also I'm aiming to head up around noonish, and I'm taking a bow saw to start collecting firewood. Anybody else thinking along these same lines...?

One last request for a volunteer for the Mashed Potatoes.  It doesn't have to be tons... Just enough for a blob on everybodies plate.

A bag or two of spuds, boiled and mashed with a bit of butter, a dash of milk and packed into a disposable roasting tin would do the trick.

Here's a wee video to put you in the mood  ;):

I'm aiming to be up there around 130ish or so depending on when I can get away. If you bring a bowsaw I'll bring an axe, no point having 2 saws.

A Christmas dinner with no mash is no dinner at all  :o  At this stage it maybe seems like a big undertaking.

What about as a suggestion that a few folk pitch in and bring a tray each of the ready-made mash you get in the supermarket?  We can then just throw it all into a foil tray to heat up et voila - mash!  No one will be out a lot of money and it won't take up too much space in your pack.

I'll bring one and a foil tray to put it all in.  Anyone else?

If you are bringing a turkey you can be excused 8)

Bringing a turkey is no excuse and pillowy mounds of mash is just what we need so I'll throw one in my pack too.  Truth is, I'll be hiding it in Foxy's pack, but she'll never notice  ;)

Another Xmas spectacular guys, it was a brilliant party. It's staggering to think we can pull this sort of thing off, you should all be chuffed. A massive party in a forest in the Mournes with Santa in attendance and surrounded by twinkling Christmas lights not to mention a dinner so fine it wouldn't be out of place  on anyone's table on Christmas day but that is all prepared outdoors on an open fire in late December. And all that from a random selection of peeps from the internet who sort their own parts individually but manage to bring it all together on the day as if it were a military operation. Just goes to show what we can do!

Well done all, you should be rightly proud.

Merry Christmas!
