Title: The NI-Wild Ham Hock Hammock
Post by: Dowser on January 24, 2014
(http://i.imgur.com/1hoefHY.jpg)

The idea is simple... We pick a forest, we take our hammocks and we cook a big Ham Hock dinner in a Dutch Oven (http://www.dutchovens.co.uk/) for everyone to share  :)

Although this outing is intended to get our hammocks an airing everybody is welcome... Tents an all!!!

Saturday/Sunday 1st March, Annalong Wood.

I'm all over this. Should be good for all dates but March is a bit busy for me, will double check.

I'm good for all except 1st March.

Cannot definitely commit yet but any of the two 1st's would do us :o  Annalong probably as good as any safe parking and all that....

Can't do 1st Feb, other dates not great either but sure that hasn't stopped me before  ;)

1st feb is defo out for me 15th is touch and go, march is fine.
Title: Re: The NI-Wild Ham Hock Hammock
Post by: Dowser on January 24, 2014
I would love to get this squeezed in as soon as pos...

The 1st of Feb might be a bit soon for us to get a Dutch Oven delivered.  I could do the 15th of Feb but I understand that this wont suit the mushy romantics amongst us!

That leaves the 1st March and the 15th March but the 15th seems soooooooo far away therefore I'm guessing we should aim for the 1st March.

We'll wait and see what date suits a few more peeps before we decide.

1st of March is ideal for me too.

I'll get a list of attendees started in the Header post so we can see how many mouths we have around the Ham Hock hot pot :-)

Got our hammocks out for the first last night up at Annalong. There's a bit of a nak to setting these up having never even pitched a tarp we think we were set up right as none of us hit the deck. Wasn't the best nights sleep I've had but I think this was purely down to not being tired and not the comfort of the hammock all we were missing was a big bowl of ham stew ;D

Nice one, what was the weather like? Has been a bit hairy of late, I've been wary about going into the garden never mind the hills :P

Bought two hammoks and a tarp back in January which got their first use on Saturday past. Great kit, good quality and very reasonable in the price department. If anyone is thinking about one but is unsure get it bought, one night in mine and im converted

Hi,
New to the forum but spent fair amount of time in hammocks including winter camps.
Wife and I spent a week this summer with a child in each hammock.
Was thinking of bringing my 3 year old along to this.
Is it child friendly?
What is the parking like (safe) as may bring the van as a back up?
Thanks
Steve
Title: Re: The NI-Wild Ham Hock Hammock
Post by: RedLeader on February 25, 2014
Definitely child friendly, at the moment I think 3 kids are coming but they're all 11+. We'll generally have a few beers around the fire and have the potential to be noisy late at night I suppose ;) Annalong can be popular with the teens, not at this time of year, only in the good weather, but there can still be broken glass around although we try and tidy as best we can when we get there. It's also not a long walk but probably enough of a challenge for a 3 year old, especially in this sort of weather.

You're more game than me, I have a toddler and I can't imagine her coming camping outside of a campsite, she's such a messer ;)

There's secure parking at Carrick Plant Hire on the lane up, is £5 per night and is a car park overlooked by the owners house.
More info here : http://www.ni-wild.co.uk/forum/general-chat/car-parking-at-carrick-little/

This is the current forecast for Sat. There's a bit of a window of dry weather between Sat and Sunday which looks lucky! Still going to be cold with the potential for wet. Wrap up warm folks and prepare for cold and wet!

Hi Steve,

It would be great to have you along.  As Redleader has already said, our forest camps are usually family friendly and there will be other kids coming along to this one, including my own daughter who's 12.

I am a big advocate of getting the kids involved in the outdoors and it's brilliant life experience for them.  My wee fella was 4 when I first took him up Binnian for an overnight bivvy on one of the roughest nights I can remember.

If your well prepared there should be no problem and always prepare for the worst.  Plenty of warm clothes, a good bed set-up, a good sleeping bag for the wee one and plenty of tasty snacks and all will be well.

Here's a short thread showing Mini Dowser bivvying indoors and out: http://www.ni-wild.co.uk/forum/general-chat/mini-dowser-has-the-bivvy-bug/msg12784/#msg12784

Hopefully see you on Saturday

Ok guys and gals I know we are all serious athletes here and that we are all well into our new year training programmes for all our various events this year like The Mourne wall wander, the Donard dander, the Cove crawl and the Lamagan limp and not forgeting our endurance events like the Seven shandys, The Annalong all nighter and the Sleeping on bumpy ground which all sound easy enough, but not forgetting our ultra endurance event of making your final beer at camp last at least an hour.
Now I know we are all watching calories because of this but a treat once in a will do us no harm so im thinking of bringing a wee bit of desert so do we have any idea of numbers as I would hate to bring any extra fig rolls, cause we all know its all about the weight ;D ;D ::)

Numbers wise it's looking like Me and Aimée, Redleader + 1, Stepstew, Matt and Kelly, Steviemuv + 1 and Shamara.  So including you and a your wee fella I make that  twelve for now.

I reckon there's about 14 fig rolls in a packet so one pack should do and we can arm wrestle, or something, to see who gets the two spares  :D

The Ham Hocks have been selected today... I just need to decide on a recipe:

What are we serving with the Ham Hocks?

I haven't quite decided yet as I've been up to my eyes with work but the plan is a one pot meal, like a casserole, for everybody to share.

I'm thinking along the lines of baby potatoes, sautéed onions, chestnut mushrooms, puy (http://www.bbc.co.uk/food/puy_lentils) lentils and garlic/herbs in a light red wine sauce, but I haven't totally finalised it yet.

I got three Ham Hocks as I am considering two for the casserole and one to be roasted.

A bag of crusty rolls wouldn't go a miss too for mopping up the juices  ;)

Sounds awesome. Any volunteers to bring a bag of crusty rolls and a drop of butter?

Typical contrary forecasts are a bit conflicting for Saturday night. It's either going to be lovely and dry or wet.

We're aiming to be leaving the cars between 1-2pm. Anyone that wants to wander up with us (and maybe carry an item or two  ::)) let me know. Anyone who doesn't have my mobile and wants it PM.

With the better weather approaching I'd like to give Annalong Wood a bit of a cleanup tomorrow afternoon or Sunday morning. It wont be long before the local yoofs start coming up again leaving their crap behind, while we're there we could give it a once over and try and carry down any crap that's lying around. Anyone that wants to give a hand pack a few thick binliners and a pair of decent gardening gloves as there's usually glass about. It doesn't take long. It would be nice to leave the place tidier so people will have less worries about bringing their kids up.

I know none of the rubbish is ours but we can still do the right thing and leave it in a good state for everyone else.

Plus, if anyone wants to clue me in on how so many people break so much glass stuff, fire away. They must be the most uncoordinated and careless cider drinkers ever ;)

Look at the state of my tarp.. lol

Lol... Practice makes perfect, as they say.  A few more hammock camps and you'll be hanging it like a pro!  Didn't Redleader put that up for you  ???

What an awesome night. Apart from having to lug a couple of dozen kilos of food and cookwear, it was an all around blast. The Ham Hock was lovely, Andy was round the fire like a whirling dervish with a wooden spoon! Desert was lovely too, apple and
cherry pie from Glenn B. Even the rain wasn't too bad, light for a couple of hours and lovely from then on, didn't even need the down jacket.

Nice one all, think this might have to become another camping fixture!

Looks fantastic guys.  You really pulled out all the stops and put on a good show as always.

The ham on the grill looks delicious, great effort.

The thoughts of sleeping on Dowser's stretcher/hammock terrifies me.

Did he fall out?  Looks like he left a bit of chest hair on that stump.

Ahhhh, that explains the bald patch on my chest this morning... I thought I had just been gnawed on by a passing fox in my inebriated sleep  :D

Surprisingly, that is my second night on that death trap, with no major incidents to report.  I think your body goes into some sort of subliminal, self preserving, survival mode once your asleep, as it knows that your gonna break your neck if you fall out of that G-String :o

I was keen to let my daughter experience hammock camping so I let her use my TW Hammock.  With Aimée enjoying the comfort and safety of the TW Hammock I had considered settling for a bivvy but with the camp entitled the Ham Hock Hammock I just couldn't bring myself to do it. Therefore I braved the Sky Hammock yet again and survived to tell the tale.

sincere thanks to Dowser etc for a delicious meal and all your hard work preparing it. I dipped out early as Matthew was getting cold in the tent, but woke at 1am asking where his dinner was!
Thanks again, we will be back, hopefully in more child-friendly weather
