Title: Mountain Rescue Fundraiser and Overnight Camp
Post by: RedLeader on October 30, 2012
Liam has pointed out that the Mourne Mountain Rescue Service are having a charity run/walk on the 24th November at Annalong. It sounds like a great chance to support the chaps we'll be hoping will save us when we're in diffs at the same time as having a night around the fire. Everyone wins ;)

The walk is only 4 miles at sea level so a doddle even for the kids or buggies, the run is more strenuous at 10 miles starting at sea level and going up to the end of Annalong Wood and back.

After we could hit Annalong Wood for a night around the fire or venture further up Annalong Valley for something a little more wild. It would also be a great time to get lots of non-NI-Wilders involved for the walk to help raise some extra money.

More info on the MMR event here (http://i1222.photobucket.com/albums/dd496/landyliam/runningforrescue.jpg) and here (https://www.facebook.com/Running4Rescue).

Title: Re: Mountain Rescue Fundraiser and Overnight Camp
Post by: LandyLiam on November 02, 2012
here's a couple of easy ways to donate to MMRT

1. visit http://www.justgiving.com/mmrtfriends (this way is best as you can add your tax to the donation)

or

2. Text MMRT10 £10 / £5 or £2 to 70070

or when in Newcastle look out for one of the white land rover charity boxes in many of the shops, I know Hilltrekker and the Barbican garage have them.

Also if you donate £10 i'll give you a copy of the 50th anniversary magazine (while stocks last) next time we meet.

Since this is a short walk and finishes early we should make for Annalong Wood and do some Bushcrafty stuff. Maybe cook some wild game if anyone could get some rabbit or wood pigeon etc, I'm open to suggestions, what do you all think?

I wont be up til late that night if I make it, so my plans revolve around cooking a big steak and having a snifter (or 2  ;)) of bourbon!!  ;D

Crackin' Idea Redleader,

I should hopefully be able to get couple few Rabbit and Wood Pigeon and could make a big communal stew/pot roast which we could munch on as and when we feel peckish!

I've always wanted to try cooking over the open fire using a tripod and big cooking pot arrangement.

Spud, if I can get a it arranged you can have some for your supper once your steak has settled ;)

I'm still heading out on Saturday night too.  It's been a bit of a disaster getting my hands on some game for the pot.

Took the day off work yesterday and it flippin' chucked it down all morning, then I had to leave my car into the garage at 1pm :-(

Had one chance at a random Pheasant but it turned out my rifle sight had been knocked off and the pheasant just stood there laughing at me  :'(

Looks like we are on slow roast lamb instead of Game Stew which maybe isn't a bad thing  :D

Don't worry. I'll be doing a bit of foraging on Thursday evening and I'm confident of a leg of lamb ;)

That's a shame, fingers crossed you can make it. Between a slow roasted leg of lamb and our new plan for mulled wine incase it's wet it looks like it's going to be a classic!

I'm still hoping to make it (plus 1), I will keep you posted! I was thinking earlier in the week would it be an idea to maybe rig up a tarp or something to sit under if it does end up pissin it down?
Title: Re: Mountain Rescue Fundraiser and Overnight Camp

We were thinking he same, looks like it might rain later on. If everyone who can throws in a tarp we'll get a makeshift shelter setup!

Looks like I'll have a few messages to do during the day so will meet up later on, so what times are people planning to land up at? and most importantly, what time will dinner be served?  ::)

is anyone actually doing the run? don't worry if you can't make it to the run, i'll bring a collection bucket to camp  ;D  taking orders for mmrt magazines, teddy bears, car stickers, let me know what you want and i'll bring them (or pop into hill trekker in newcastle to buy them)

Thought that leg of lamb might tempt you up  ::)  We are hopefully heading up early (1pm) before the storms arrive to get camp set up and and the leg strung up beside the fire.

Dinner will be served somewhere between 4pm and 5am depending on how long it takes to cook 2kg of meat in torrential wind and rain  :P

Unfortunately the walk turned out to be pram unsuitable so I'm scuppered for that, however, I'm more than happy to donate cold hard instead. I'd actually quite like an MMRT teddy if they're baby friendly.

That leg of lamb tempted me too.  I'll make up a redcurrant gravy to accompany it, if I can invite myself to a morsel.  Anything else in particular that would make mouths water?  What time meeting at Carrick Little, 1pm?

No need, you will see the camp from the path (more likly if there is a fire going)

Its about 100m from the end of the wood.

That was another really amazing camp... A picture is worth a thousand words as they say so heres about 20,000  worth which will save me a load of typing  ;)

With lamb on the menu, and not knowing how long it would take to cook, I had myself a light snack before setting off:

Brilliant night lads, the lamb was nothing short of genius. Cooked to perfection old school, can't wait to try it again! Lobster, lamb with redcurrant gravy, mice pies and mulled wine followed by a Cuban thanks to Matt the international traveler. What a night!! Just a shame about the torrential rain :(

Not as sweet as mince pies, and a wee bit furry, but all in all very scrummy and nutritious  :D

I had a good experience meeting up with NI-Wild members.  Not least to sit patiently and salivating whilst watching the leg of lamb slowing revolving in the heat of the fire.  Starters was lobster and then spicy rabbit.  What else would you have?!

The camp was a good set up and the culinary expertise of Mr Dowser and Matt was greatly appreciated as was evidenced by the clean plates and acceptance of second and indeed third helpings.

As the evening progressed the rain came as forecasted, .  The tarps did their best to stave of the worst of the downpour and along with the company and quantities of fine wines the evening trundled along nicely.

Supper was served shortly after the arrival of Laim and Mr & Mrs Spud, who deserve credit for settting off from the warmth of their homes on such an univiting evening.

Great photos of a great nights outdoors.

Thank you to all who were there.

What a great night, it was a real struggle to leave the warm house, especially as i could feel a bit of a man flu coming on, but once i was in the car there was no turning back. Yes i got soaked, mainly from emptying the tarp down my arm, and someone else tried to empty it down my back  ;D , But stayed fairly dry overall despite sitting outside in the rain, no such thing as bad weather, only bad clothing  ;D . Great to meet Mrs Spud, couldn't shut her up all night  :D  . Thanks for the lamb supper, mulled wine and g&t, i got well laquered, i think Andy got the gin and tonic bottles mixed up and gave me too much  :o  didn't get to bed til 2.15am. My toes were like ice cubes which stopped me having a great sleep, so bit shattered today and still haven't downloaded my photos yet. Overnight min in the tent was 3 deg. We were blessed with such a glorious morning to make up for the wet night. Forgot to do a wee collection, but sure you can donate online at http://www.justgiving.com/mournemrt and if donating £10 or over i'll make sure you get a copy of the MMRT 50th anniversary magazine  :) .

Is that the knife you got ???

The Cold Steel SRK (Survival Rescue Knife)

Survival/Rescue operations demand a versatile knife able to withstand the most extreme abuse. The Cold Steel SRK (Survival Rescue Knife), standard issue of the United States Navy Seals , was designed specifically with this in mind. The blade is finished with a rich Teflon© coat which helps to protect the AUS 8A Stainless steel from the elements. The Cold Steel SRK Survival Rescue Knife features a tremendously strong clip point that's fine enough for delicate work, yet possesses enough belly for efficient cutting, slashing and skinning strokes as well. At 3/16 of an inch thick, the Cold Steel Survival Rescue Knife© offers the sturdiest possible point and edge configuration, without sacrificing sharpness. The Cold Steel SRK Survival Rescue Knife's handle sports a single quillion finger guard and a deeply checkered Kraton© grip.

Overall Length: 10 3/4"
Blade Length: 6"
Blade Thickness: 3/16"
Blade Material: Japanese AUS 8A Stainless Steel with Black Teflon Finish Sharp
Handle Length: 4 3/4" - Kraton
Knife Weight: 8.2 oz.
Sheath: Secure-Ex Sheath
Fully Functional and Battle Ready

It's now my second favourite piece of kit
