Hi Mr J,

There's a 50:50 chance I might be going to Newcastle, England, this week but if I don't go I will definitely join you for this.

You pick the summit and I'll tag along  :)

All in all I was not thinking of binnan. I was thinking about doing the west of the mournes.

I will look at the map later and make a choice.

Well I have 2 ideas one is Hen like Mourneman has posted or we could park next to Spelga Dam and head towards Cock mountain.

Your vote at the top!!!

So with the amount of people saying they will go (5) and 5 votes then we are going to Hen (by the way I said Cock).

I will sort out some timings later.

Lol I said I'd go, but I didn't vote as I have no preference. :)

I voted for Cock (Snigger) because it would be a new summit for me, but I don't mind.  I just want a night in the hills.

I'm so looking forward to this wee outing... It's been a while since I've been proper wild camping.  Been hanging around a lot of woods recently literally, as I've been lounging about in a hammock  ;)

No bivvy bag for me this time though.  I'm doggy sitting this weekend so will be bringing my tent so the wee dog doesn't take off in the middle of the night  ::)

If the dog holds me back any I'll let you all fire on ahead and meet you at the summit.

My experience of Hen Mountain is that it is almost always windy, especially in the gap between the tors. You might want to consider alternative spots in more sheltered areas.

managed to get up to hen for a wee recce today, didn't spot johns recommended spot, well maybe i did and didn't recognise it  :)  (so many torrs) but the first torr you pass has a good flat bit at the top for plenty of tents, not the most sheltered spot though, i reckon john's bit would be better if windy, but the wind up there seems to come from every direction  :o

a word of warning though, if arriving after dark it would be easy to get your self into a predictament if passing this spot as there are plenty of dropoffs and the direct route to the summit is not the correct one

What's the etiquette on digging a pit on a summit.  I don't mean to be a pain in the a** but I would have thought digging a pit, burning a fire in it all night, and burying the remnants would be quite messy.

I have a light weight folding bbq that I will bring.  My Primus Stove is getting a service so I will cook my dinner on the BBQ and we can use it after for the fire.

Need to careful about lighting fires on Hen mountain,as it's part of Batt's estates, which have the shooting rights over the land, the game-keeper lives just below the mountain & i don't think he would warm  ;D to the idea of digging a pit, although i'am sure burning a few fire log would be fine as shooting season had just finished

i thought digging the pit for the fire then filling it in after with the same sod would have been ok  ???  other option would be to pile a few rocks up and burn a log on those, but the bbq looks perfect, cheers andy, i'll use it to heat my chinese up when i arrive late  ;D

Sorry to make you all jealous but that was a great night, i very nearly pulled out too but managed to drag myself out of a cosy warm house at 8.45pm despite a promise of pizza takeaway with the family. I wrapped up in many layers to combat the bitter cold, of course once i started going up the hill with a very heavy backpack i was sweating like a *****  in a *****  (self censored  ;D ) not helped along by the fact i'd just eaten a curry fried rice in the car park  ::)  got to the top 30 mins later (beat your time matthew and satnav records to prove it  :P ) was was greeted by a wee snow flurry and and 2 lads talking shite round a cosy firelog. The wind had dropped away the the sky was mostly clear giving some amazing views. The only damper on the evening was the fact that i had to stay sober  >:(

Yeah nice pics lads and it looks like you had another top night in the hills.

Hen wasnt a mountain that ive thought much about but its now found its way onto my list.

Thats the kind of morning that would just be screaming out for a coffee and bacon soda at meelmore lodge cafe.

Few more pics of the night.  Apologies in advance for all the dog pics.  New dog, first night in the hills, so the novelty hasn't worn off yet  ::)

Not really, as we were expecting the worst of weather we were well wrapped up, the firelog gave off minimal heat, just looks like a big fire in those long exposure shots  :)  there was so little wind i didn't even bother getting the anemometer out to measure it.

Nice write up Dave, it sounds like a pretty wild night, as you said if there was someone else up with you youd probably have stayed, bad weather and being by yourself can be a bit unearving.

Had you put the tent up before, it looks a lot like a marmot grid.

I think its really the same as the Marmot grid just lighter. I hadnt put it up as the plan was he was using it and I was using my Laser but I got the honours of popping its cherry  :D

Oh yeah!!! High five's!!! ;D ;D

Great blog Dave, but didn't you check the weather forecast, i knew the winds were to ease  ;D  fair play to you for getting the tent up alone in those conditions, spent a few windy nights alone on summits myself, but not in winter. Do you think you might have been a bit better protected if you'd pitched in the crater on the other side of the wall? thats were i stayed one windy night on Commedagh.

The Kodak camera I bought is still in Manufacture and is not being shipped until 13th March.  I used my Lumx LX5 for the pics above.
