What would everyone say to the 20-21st Aug?
-
I really like the sound of this too and Errigal is defo on my list of To-do's
-
Errigal sounds like a plan then.
-
Sounds like a plan..
-
Errigal sounds like a plan then.
Nice one... I'm excited already ;D
-
Great idea... Errigal has been on my list for awhile now so sounds like an ideal chance to finally check it out :)
-
So Errigal it is. How does the 20-21st sound to everyone?
I have done a search of campsites and found sleepyhollow as one. Anyone stayed there before?
-
Sleepy hollow is a really nice site, whorya and myself stayed there last year and are headin there again at the end of july. Its got two pubs just round the corner from it although its still a very quiet campsite, the larger has music and good food which is welcome after a long days walking. The site has clean showers too which is a bonus.
Were gowing back to do some of the glover walk and errigal again, as the first time we could see dang all from the top of it, it suffers from being covered in cloud alot apparently.
-
You beat me to it >:(
You forgot to mention that the showers play classical music which is quite relaxing.
As Rumblebum mentioned it is a policy of "all quiet after 11pm". That said they do have a few fire pits so you could do the fire and bbq thing then head to the pub. Just as long as you are quiet on the way back to the tent. The owner Art is a sound fella and he lives on the grounds of the site so he is probably keen to make sure others (or himself) aren't disturbed.
One of pubs was established by the father of Enya and Moya Brennan (Clannad). I think it will have music on most, if not all weekend nights. The grub is good too.
-
Same thing happened with me when I climbed Errigal, it was that bad with mist and torrential rain that we couldn't make it over the ridge..
-
see http://www.ni-wild.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=2061.0 for choice of campsites
-
Errigal is great if you have a clear day and can enjoy the views, but if you do a straight up-and-down then it doesn't take very long. I'd recommend that you start by walking up Mackoght (which is often known incorrectly as Little/Wee Errigal). You get cracking views of the other hills (including Errigal). The summit ridge on Errigal is wee buns.
Errigal via Mackoght (http://www.northern-focus.com/routes/walking/errigal-via-mackoght)
There's lots of other walking in the area too!
-
So Everyone ok with the 20-21st and Sleepyhollow?
-
Got to say I'm tempted to join you ... if I can persuade someone to join me in my tent ... and no, that's not a proposition! (I've already got someone lined up) ;D
-
Hmmm, maybe! Just ordered a new tent, so it needs some outings!
-
Right
I have had a reply from Sleepyhollow. They are happy for us to use the site and they have said that the will put us around the campfire aswell.
We need to settle the people going, the dates and how many tents. ASAP as they need the info as it may be busy in August.
Really looking forward to this.
Please reply ASAP.
-
I wont know until later in July I'm afraid. Is the date now the 20-21st? If so can the thread title be changed.
-
Those dates suit me although its likely I'll only be camping sat night as I hope to visit friends in the area fri night. (1 tent)
-
I'm a definate for the 20-21st... One tent thks ;D

Two things that spring to mind:
How much does Sleepy Hollow cost for two nights? Only reason I ask is because I looked into this before and I reckon for similar money we could hire a cottage/barn for the weekend. Last time I checked you could get a place like this (http://www.donegalcottageholidays.com/thebarn-dunfanaghy#) for around £30 each for the weekend. Of course it all depends on numbers, and before the accusations come flying I haven't gone soft and am more than happy to give my Quechua pop-up tent another outing :P :D
Second thing is I would be half tempted to take the opportunity to do the Glover Highlander (http://www.ni-wild.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=1825.0) walk. I'd talked about it before and this sounds a prime opportunity. If I was going to do it I'd probably give it a blast over two days, so head to Donegal on the Friday and stay overnight then tackle the Glover over Saturday/Sunday with a wild camp on the Saturday night. Would all depend on getting somewhere to leave the cars (perhaps Sleepy Hollow would allow us if we were staying there the first night?) and being able to get back to the cars on Sunday. Perhaps we could organise two walks like we've done before; a single day trip up Errigal and a two day trip along the Glover.
Not trying to meddle with plans or anything like that, just throwing a couple of ideas out on the table for discussion. Planning something like this is nearly as much fun as actually doing it :) Either way, no matter what we end up doing I'm pretty certain I will be along for this!
-
I really want to do Errigal as it is on my todo list. (Think its on others as well).
What we could do is as it is a small mountain compaired to what we al ready do is include some walking to it or around it and make a day of it like simon said.
Sure if you want to go and do the Glover Highland you can but I was personelly not looking for a wild camp more of what we did last weekend.
-
Nice spanner thrown in Suspect but I like it ;D
The idea of Muckish to Errigal along the Glover Highlander Walk (http://www.simonstewart.ie/Glover/glover.htm) seriously appeals to me!!!
I know we had great fun at the Bloody Bridge Family Camp but I really really do love wild camping/bivvying and never feel settled in a tent.
The route card for Muckish to Errigal can be found here: http://www.simonstewart.ie/Glover/profile.htm
If I was doing this I would like to head down early on the Friday and get Muckish out of the way followed by a wild bivvy. That would leave Saturday and Sunday to squeeze in a few summits and another wild camp before conquering Errigal.
I feel another Kerry coming on lol

I would be up for this one, I will have to check with work, but stick me down as a possible!
-
Na
I was not looking to do wild camping. I cant be arsed carry all my kit. was just looking for a relaxing evening by the fire with a couple of beers and a good long walk on saturday.
I am still looking to go and do the camping thing with a walk tho
-
Dates are fine for me. How many Mountains....? depends on my fitness level..I may start hillwalking again..
-
Right whos coming camping at the camp site? need numbers? ???
-
Right whos coming camping at the camp site? need numbers? ???
Just to keep things complicated:
If it's Dowser +1 I'll be staying at the campsite and doing Errigal only.
If it's Dowser only I will be Wild Camping and doing the Glover Highlander from Muckish to Errigal.
I'll wait and see who else is definitely going and what they fancy doing.
My +1 wouldn't have a lot of hill experience but I would be happy enough trailing them up Errigal for the day :D
-
really want this to happen even if it is just a couple of us. please if you can confirm ASAP that would be great.
Thanks
-
I am up for the campsite and doing Errigal but I am not in a position to confirm at the minute.
Matthew
-
I also wouldn't be able to confirm until much closer to the time. I have a product launch that week and it depends on how things go.
-
i'm off work that week so i'm more certain than usual that i can do sat night, do they need deposits? i also like the idea of doing that big walk and camping where we drop but i'm easy either way
-
Is it just me or is Errigal and Carruntoohill (Kerry last year) laid out very similar.
Horseshoe... Could this be another Ridgewalk MikeD and 666pack :o

Guys I won't make this one since I'll be up there doing pretty much the same thing few weeks earlier.
You may find our plans of interest when making your own.
Myself and Rumblebum are hoping to go up on the Friday night to climb and wildcamp on Muckish. We plan to go up the Miner's Track and then down to Muckish Gap. At this point we will have done 25% of the climb (500m) and 24% of the distance (4.8k) of the Glover Highlander Walk.
Some other friends are joining us on the Saturday morning. With the other car, we'll get one parked at Errigal (the end of the walk). Back to Muckish Gap (now with daysacks) we'll then do Crocknalargagh, the 'Aghlas', Beaghy, Mackoght and Errigal. This will involve about 15k of walking and 1500m of ascent. We can cut this down a little by taking a direct route across the Aghlas. If anyone is struggling there are some easy exits between Beaghy and Mackoght, or between Mackoght and Errigal.
We are staying in Sleepy Hollows on the Saturday night. We'll do a wee bit more walking on the Sunday before heading home.
Errigal is a great mountain but on its own it's not a big day out in the hills. Perhaps half a day at the beach would also be something to do. Or as Simon said Errigal can be combined with a couple of other hills. It is not an easy thing to do without backtracking a bit since the area is very linear in nature.
The last time we were there we did Errigal, then Mackoght, then Beaghy. Rather then backtracking we took a line towards the car. After a short yomp across grassland we picked up a farm track that lead us back to the main road about a mile-and-a-half east of the Errigal car park. This farm track may go the whole way down to Lough Atlan? If I was doing that again I would do it the opposite way round so that Errigal was the big prize at the end.
You could possibly all combine your ideas with a mix of the above?
-
And if you forget you gatters your doomed, dooooooooomed it tell ya! If you tackle Errigal first youl probably go across the bog, and sink.
Theres some really wet and marshy ground around that whole region.
-
And if you forget you gatters your doomed, dooooooooomed it tell ya!
Now that's funny lol ;D

Count me in wild camp Errigal
-
If some of you guys are doing a wild camp on the saturday, Lough Altan may be a good spot to stay for the night ,Awesome scenery (if its not misty), theres some old farm buildings for shelter and fresh water, ive been thinking about staying there myself when i get the chance. Youl have done quite a bit of the walk by that stage and i reckon youl be ready for a mohito.
-
So whats the plan?

I'm still in... and would still be mad keen to do the Glover Highlander (http://www.ni-wild.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=1825.0). If I'm going to be travelling all that way I would like to make it worthwhile and have a bit of a mini adventure.

I'm going too but can't be bothered carrying my Ruck Sack!!! Does anybody want to come along and carry it for me? You will be rewarded with all the Super Noodles you can eat, but you have to carry em too :D
-
well what can I say. I am a man of many needs. ;) but I am still wanting to share a tent.

does anyone want to share my Vango Tornado.
please fill in the following questionnaire:
1. Would you consider yourself
a - slightly gaseous but can hold it in
b - a right parper
c - silent, but deadly 8)
2. Do you snore:
a - never
b - i've never noticed, but my wife does punch me a lot in my sleep for some strange reason
c - no more than matt ::)
3. Does your wife know you openly offer to sleep with men:
a - she trusts me 100%
b - she's always keen to learn new things
c - what happens in donegal stays in donegal :-*
if you answer all a's then you have a chance of success, any b's and money will need to change hands, any c's then you wouldn't even get my teddy bear in that tent
could you also provide width of said tent A, width of said Lenny B.
A-B must be > C + D
[where C is width of tentmate and D is width of the rucksack "wall" (to prevent inadvertant spooning after a heavy night drinking from either party]
-
c - no more than matt ::)
Rite you, enough of that.

Yeah Liam that was witty, you put your heart and soul into that one lol.
Whorya and myself got back from donegal yesterday and had a brilliant time, the both of us went up on friday night and parked at the base of muckish, went up the miners track to the top were we made camp , drank wine and burnt firelogs, we were the only ones up and had the place to ourselves, class.
Woke up really late and had to bomb it down muckish to meet the rest of the crew that arrived up. Then the real walking started. We had a couple of maps printed off and were able to cover the peaks through to Altan lough, were we went for a quick dip, that was us walking from 12oclock through to about 6ish, Altan was superb and a great area for camping overnight. We were planning to do Errigal but as we woke late and were pushed for time we decided to do it on the sunday morning, this went badly wrong as we may have had a few to many beers that night and the weather had closed in on the sunday.
Youl have a really good time but it needs a bit of co ordination as to were to park and two cars would be recomended. Andy, im not to sure if it would be one for wee sally.
I took my camera but the battery wasnt charged so whorya will probably post his pics some time soon. Enjoy yourselves.
-
I would like to be in Donegal to begin my accent of Muckish (666m) by 5pm on Friday 19th August and I intend to Summit Bivvy Muckish that evening.
"Good moorning, I was just pissing by" :P
I'll stick something up about our trip later on tonight hopefully. On a different thread, so as not to clog up this one.
-
This thread has got a bit messy with so many different suggestions for this trip so I'm gonna try and get it back to basics.
Lenny's original plan was this:
"I really enjoyed myself over the weekend (Bloody Bridge Family Camp) (http://www.ni-wild.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=2178.0) and was thinking of doing the same thing one weekend in August in Donegal. My thought would be to travel on friday evening. Camp friday night, do a activity on saturday, BBQ and fire pit Saturday night travel back sunday. 19th - 21st August 2011 (Friday to Sunday)"
To be honest I may have had a part to play in this thread getting messy because Suspectmonkey suggested the Glover Highlander (http://www.simonstewart.ie/Glover/glover.htm) and it got my juices flowing... I do love a challenge!!!
I have removed my Route Card etc from this thread and placed it into one of it's own called Errigal the Dowser Way (http://www.ni-wild.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=2316.msg24248#msg24248) just so that you know what my plans are if you fancy a bit of a challenge. Apologies for any confusion :-[
I think, from chatting to Lenny yesterday, his plans remain the same... Travelling to Donegal Friday night or early Saturday morning, a quick once up Errigal, and back to the campsite for a bit of craic and a night cap around an open fire.
To get this Trip back on the right track could everbody who is interested in conquering Errigal, then back to the campsite for a BBQ etc say "AYE!" and re-register your interest below please :)
This will be a great trip whatever way you decide to tackle it and I don't want to see it flounder just because I want to play Action Man ::)
-
My plans have changed slightly. I also want a challenge but more relaxed than combat Dowser!!!
I was planing on camping near the base of Muchish and going for a dander Saturday morning around there than driving to the base of Errigal and doing a evening walk up Errigal and meet Dowser at the top before his summit camp. Walk down then decide to drive home or camp and drive back sunday morning.
This way I will get the most out of what the range offers without having to hump all my kit around all weekend.
-
Hi guys would it be ok if i called down to meet yous all on the friday nite cant stay tho i have a 60th birthday party on saturday but would like to put faces to names if yous dont mind.

I will be in the afternoon. I don't want to do it by myself thou

One of my nephews that was going has gone and broken his arm :( , we will still be in Donegal that weekend in a holiday cottage so I hope to still be able to do Errigal, camping is unlikely though.

Maybe we could meet in the morning and do it together. I was thinking about going and finding some climbing/bouldering in the afternoon (Weather permitting.)

Right, I've just pitched 3 tents on the shores of lough foyle, cracked open a beer and sitting on a deckchair while the kids are happily making sandcastles on the beach, but where is everyone else? ;D. Have a good time in donard wood everyone, sort of wish I was there but here is very nice too :)
