Open for entries now Guys and girls.
I think theres a right few said last year they'd be doing this one ;)
http://www.mourne2day.com/ (http://www.mourne2day.com/)
-
funnily enough i was think today that i must start entering some of these events, hope to do this one with my son, if not i'll be looking a team mate, C or D class for me.
-
....would need a team mate myself.....if anyone is interested... i,d have a crack at this... Class B....
-
I'm definitely interested - it was a great event last year despite the weather.
Due to my success, I'll be in B class this year ;D
Probably needing a partner: Bic, have you done this before?
-
...haven,t entered an event before, though am a competent orienteerer/navigator, keen outdoor walker average/above average fitness.....though i lend my fitness more to hills and outdoors than gym and upper body...if that makes sense....
-
Cool - you'll definitely enjoy it, although I'll be looking to run everything 'not upwards' with a 5kg pack so perhaps our objectives are a little different.
If you don't plan to run a lot, perhaps C would be a better introduction?
-
...no problems, will have a look at Class C.....though i love a challenge...
-
I wasn't sure by your comment - you mentioned walking more but with the orienteering and that you might be a flyer! but check out the times from the previous years on the site and you'll get an idea of what you might be comfortable with.
-
Think I'll be giving class C a go, I have a friend who says they want to do it, but I'll probably end up looking for a partner on here.
-
I might give class C a try
-
Probably wont be entering now for this year. Have 2 weekends in Sept booked off for travel, won't get another... but it is on every year.
-
I would have loved to have given the walk a go, but have a family wedding that weekend! Maybe we could organise a trip on here some weekend following the same route? Has anyone done the challenge walk before?
-
I think your thinking of the mourne way marathon the MMM is in september.
-
I think your thinking of the mourne way marathon the MMM is in september.
you are right MG, my bad ;D but I still have a wedding on the date of the MMM, not that I could run the length of myself! could walk all day but Im designed for comfort not speed :P lol
-
hmmmm, actually the dates dont work for me either, so next year it is !
But we can still get cracking with our own Mourne 500 training \ challenges !

You can get the map ref points off there website and give a course a go. Do it at your own pace. We did d class last year, great route but the weather was horrible.

good old mourne weather, nothing like it! ;) I like the sound of doing the course anyway to try it, maybe by next year I will be fit enough to give it a proper go! ::)
-
I think me and 666_pack are doing it!
You might be better trying last years one. They changed the guy who plots the course from 09. He seems to use more of the Mournes. The last guy consentrated on one area.
Last year we started at Silent valley and camped on the far side Hen.

cheers man!
-
enter by end of today to save £10, i still can't decide what class to do, think i'll stick with D class for my first year
-
Well thats me now booked into class D with my son.
-
Well thats me now booked into class D with my son.
Nice one - that'll be a good adventure for him... adventuresome, but doable!
-
only 1 more day to enter, get in there, you know you want to ;D
i've spent the evening looking at old class D routes, wee buns, although plotting maps gets tricky after a few beers, hic, burp, ::)
this year its starting from Attical so it will probably be over the western mournes which i haven't really done before so it will be great to do some new routes
-
Me and Billybackpack are hopefully giving class c a blast
-
a wee silly question for the MMM veterans here, do you actually have to run some of the course to meet the cut off times? i was counting on walking the whole lot
-
You should be dead on liam with a fast walk. There was only once when were close to not making a cut off, but there was about 30 other teams charging for the checkpoint. I think it was a slight mistake on there part.
-
Redleader have you got your team in yet?
-
I had the boots and all on, then I remembered I had a hair appointment that morning :P
Who all is entering this year?
Redleader have you got your team in yet?
-
Not me, I'm away that weekend :( Good luck to all those taking part though, fingers crossed the Indian Summer arrives that weekend!
-
Any one else doing this?
-
looks like just us 2, and my teammate hasn't even started practising yet :o looks like i'll be carrying the heavy rucksack >:(
-
I hope the weather gets better. Its was pretty bad last year.
-
All the best to the entrants, hope the weather picks up for you!
-
Liam, are you lot gonna be bombing around chimney rock then? If you run off wine my wine il be after ya :D
-
as we're starting in attical i can't see us getting as far as chimney rock :(
just got the cooking scales out to start weighing stuff, feeling really nerdy :D
-
Another gear nerd convert :)
Good luck!

-
better believe it!
did you know that a laminated mournes map weighs less than than a normal map + a map case, every little weight saving helps, this is nearly as bad as when i used to count the rivets in my land rover :D
now just have to work out what drink offers to most alcohol units per gramme, why is beer so bloomin heavy >:( but it is the same weight as water, hmmm.....

BUCKFAST
-
all ready to go now, had my last supper, well more like a fish supper washed down with budweiser, not sure if thats the ideal meal the night before but it tastes great ;D
my rucksack weighs in at 12kg and my sons is 8kg, thats includes water coats, food (approx 2 litres water each), decided on southern comfort for the nightcap :) thindery showers forecast for tomorrow, could be interesting !
-
Fair play to ya Liam and good luck for the run, errr walk, stroll, crawl, do you have to camp out for the night as well?
-
Good luck guys, hope its a top one!

-
Good luck Liam, I've a marathon myself tomorrow, my sister is getting married, so a marathon drinking session is on the cards! ;D
-
cheers everyone, i should really be in bed now getting some rest but there was some southern comfort left over and it looked very lonely ::)
-
Well whats a guy to do, it wouldnt be good to ignore the one he loves ;)
-
Well that's day 1 done, phew, 15km, 1100m of ascent (although it felt a lot more) we did it in 6.5 hrs. Tent up and the spaghetti is on.
Started from Attical at 1030am, did shanlieve, pigeon rock, eagle, muck (that was steep!) Carn, and now we are camping at spelga dam right beside the magic road, would be magic if someone delivered some beer and a chinese ;D
-
Well done Liam, bring on tomorrow!
-
Where's the campsite near Spelga?
-
Just below the dam, not exactly a campsite, more of a soggy field! MG1 and billy backpack are just setting up tent now after a hard day in c class, 8.5hrs, currently in 72nd place. C class was a lot. Worse than our d class.
-
Top stuff, I'm jealous!

What !!! Jealous of walking your ass of all day and camping in a soggy field and paying for the privilege :D
And there's so much lycra here its like an audition for "robin hood men in tights" :o
-
Lol. Even though this is a very comfy sofa and very decent red, I'm still jealous. Well not of the lycra...

Well done. :)
Anyone taking part in the MMM has to be at least medium rare to begin with ;)
Good going Liam & Son!
-
and those people doing the elite class are superhuman :o B class people aren't far behind them either
so here's the pics

and a t-shirt of course ;)
-
Well done Liam. Looks like a great weekend. How come camping was at Spelga? I've never seen anyone pitched there before.
-
Nice one. That pair of Villains look like they're having a light stroll :)
Also good to see the Coleman tent I've had for years being represented in the toilet queue photo... Clearly comfort competitors though - not a Lidl special to be seen :D
-
the campsite was like tentnerd central, lots of lovely lightweight stuff, we had the vaude taurus 2 weighing in at a massive 2.5kg (by mmm standards) but loads of space for 2 people and rucksacks :) i popped into Gareth and Andys "cosy" 2 man vango banshee 200 for a bit o craic & buckfast last night, had to stick the feet out of the porch though with 3 of us in it, i'd say those lads were warm all night ;)
-
Ha ha - can't be any cosier than a Laser Comp with 2 people!
-
Its was pretty tight. Day 1 nearly broke us we we're thinking of quitting once we hit the campsite. We got settled in had bit of craic and some tonic. On day 2 we felt a bit better decided to carry on, we headed over the first hill toward the first marker.
We bumped into a nice couple from the North coast who seemed abit lost, so we stuck together and headed on. After a while a team of guys from Liverpool came running back and told us we going the wrong way. After some thought we all deciced on a new direction. A short while later doubt started to set in with every one having different ideas on which way we should be going. It then came to the point that we had no idea where we were. The weather closed in and the vis was really bad.
We kept walking untill we found a wall. This completely threw us, there were no walls marked on the map of the mountains we thought we were near. The weather lifted for a while and could see the great gully on Eagle mountain. We had been on Pigeon rock, no where near were we thought we were. Some how in the bad weather we walked past Spelga res and not even seen it. Due to this we missed are cut off. We just picked up the markers on the way out. The long walk of shame to the finish point. First MMM not to finish, i'm already thinking about next year >:(
Fair play Liam well done. :)
-
Unlucky lads. I hate that feeling when you see a feature you aren't expecting... it just pickles you completely. Think we've all been there. But always next year!
-
It was tough going, don't think i would have been quite up for C class, it's very demoralising when you get lost (or even think you are lost when you're not!), an altimeter would have been a useful addition for contouring the hills in the mist, i found my tesco compass watch handy to make frequent quick checks (never liked the normal compass dangling round my neck). I waited quite a while for you guys at the finish for a team photo then eventually realised your car was gone ;D what time did you reach the finish? (2pm for us)
-
Worst thing was Andy had the right bearing and we walking on it, untill the doubt crept in we had been going great. We got back about 1 Liam and headed off bout 1.30.
C class was tight but doable, considering Andy and me have only been in the hills about 4 times between us in over a year. More hill time required and hope for better weather next year.
-
I also have to mention how well Conor did, he was completely done at the end of day one and went to bed about 8pm and didn't sleep at all well, he had very sore feet all day on Sunday (poor choice of footwear, old cheap boots, he should have worn the innov8s i got from 20clicks) but he kept motoring on and got quite competitive, he still managed to beat me up all the steep hills (although i had the edge on the downhills) and he hasn't done more than 5 mountains in his whole life and did no training for the event :o it was a real case of willpower. He wouldn't even let me carry his rucksack when i offered to ease his pain, he wanted to complete it properly. I think i'll have to smoke him a kipper for breakfast ;D
-
Fair play to him Liam he done you proud.
You should reward him with a nice cool bottle of buckfast ;D
-
Really gutted as I think we had the potential to complete the course !
Unfortunatly after the doubt set in that was the road to disaster, if you are sure of your bearing you should always trust your compass as vis was extremely poor and we had no other way of making sure of our postition.
-
I was speaking to a guy in work who ran into similar navigational problems at the start of Day 2. They were unable to complete it.
-
here's my D class route, red is day 1, green is day 2
(its a photo of the map as i couldn't fit it in the scanner!)
-
Nice one Liam and and fair play to Connor, can't have been easy. Well done to Andy and Gareth as well, you's did better than I did anyway since I missed the deadline then couldn't afford it :D Maybe next year.
Route looks pretty good, may have to give it a go sometime
-
here's a blog of a c class entrant, http://markrobsontravels.wordpress.com/ great read
some quotes
Unfortunately, by this stage, my legs and gone completely. While I wasn’t looking some bastard had injected molten lead into my thighs and I was moving at the pace of a pile ridden sloth.
Ian had a nasty arrythmia attack and his face turned a strange shade of magnolia. What do I do if he goes down I pondered ? I quickly checked the rules. Yes it does state that both team members must finish the event as a partnership but it doesn’t state exactly HOW MUCH of your partner needs to complete the course. So in the worst case scenario my plan was to contact Mountain Rescue – give them Ian’s Grid Reference and put him in a survival bag. That is called empathy. Then cut his ear off, put it in my pocket, and carry on.
-
My latest read is a book by Moire O Sullivan "mud sweat and tears" and there is a chapter on the MMM, interestingly she used bubble wrap as a camping mat, and her teammate used the map as hers!!! now i know how they get those packs so light :)
http://moireosullivan.com/buy-the-book-mud-sweat-and-tears/
-
Fair play to all who took part - something I would love to do (and may do next year if my knee holds out).
Anyone got any stats on distance/elevation gain etc (or GPS logs)? Would be interested in seeing this. Is class C the lowest class or is there a class D for people like myself with dodgy knees?
Liam, reading that book at the moment and it's a superb read. Moire is a real inspirational character. Would love to have the fitness, time and determination to do the Wicklow Round even if it was over 2 or three days. The book is ip there with 'Feet In The Clouds'.
-
Class D is the easiest (or less difficult 8) ) which is the one i did.
all the class details are here
http://www.mourne2day.com/app/webroot/files/File/Route%20Cards/Cards11.pdf
while class D was a mere ::) 1430m ascent over 30.6km, it felt a lot more, navigation mistakes add to the totals and some of the terrain is boggy untracked routes, so if you haven't done it before, start with class D ;)
class C was only 3km longer and 250m more ascent, but due to more difficult routes that added an estimated extra 2-3 hrs each day over class D :o
Feet in the Clouds is a great book, one iof the first mountain books i've read, probably due a re-read by now.
