Clothes for Wet Weather
« on: September 09, 2009 »

Seems like the time of year is approaching when more warm and waterproof clothes will be required and I'm wondering what everyone prefers or advises.

Personally, I run quite hot so need reasonably light gear when I'm on the move but I soon cool down when I stop. What I'm considering is base layer / fleece / lightwight but waterproof gortex jacket and have a Gilet (either fleece or down) for warmth when not moving. I don't need to be ultralight but the less weight the better!

What does everyone wear and what would you recommend for a reasonably priced jacket and gilet.

It's natural fibres for me. base is an Ulfrott wool top, mid layer is either a Swandri ranger shirt (wool) or a Helly Hansen Wool fleece, and the outer layer is usually a Ventile jacket and I usually carry a poncho for the extreme wet stuff though so far the ventile outer has coped well in pretty heavy rain. it's a set up for the woods and probably not the best for hill climbing but as I spend most of my time in the woods and not the hills, it suits me.
