We were pondering a trip to the pots on the north slopes of Slieve Commedagh. Plan was to start at Meelmore and head for the Spinkwee / Cascade River then follow the wall. (Although we could also go the other side of Luke's Mountain). At that point there's no path, does anyone know the area, what's the ground like underfoot and is it easy to get to the pots. Also, is it tent suitable?

The ascent along the spinkwee is long and gentle with bits of path if I remember correctly. At the top there are some gravel and grassy patches which should take a tent or two but they may be a little sloped. Its an impressive and secluded place, definitely worth camping in. There used to be a piece of a WW2 aircraft in there but I couldn't find it the last time I was there, perhaps its in someone's garden.

I was actually up in the Pot of Legawherry last month for the first time. It's a brilliant place, unfortunately the weather was poor when I was there.

We followed the Spinkwee up from Tollymore, sticking to the left hand side whilst ascending, then followed the last river on the left up into the Pot, again following the left-hand side of it.

You get a bit of water running off the side of Shan Slieve, but there is a bit of a track to follow. It was plenty dry right up in the Pot though. There was a small river just to the right of where the last photo below was taken from, which provided any water needed.

You'll not struggle to fit a few tents up there.

There is still plane wreckage there.

I should add that while I was there I was also down round where that track on your route ends. By all means use that route, it should be straightforward too. Even better, go up one way and down another. Enjoy

I think following the river might be easiest, especially since it will likely be in the evening. Where did you start from and how long did it take?

We were based at Tollymore Mtn Centre and started from there. We spent a lot of time navigating around various features, so didn't charge straight at it. A good couple of hours would give plenty of time for it. You could probably do it in a lot less time if wished.
