Donegal Mountains
« on: August 27, 2009 »

This might be worth a look up close if we're thinking bout Donegal in the future

Mount Errigal Donegal
Donegal
Phone: Mount Errigal is situated in the north-west of Donegal between Dunlewy, Gweedore, Gortahock and Glenveagh. It's a most distinctive and exciting mountain standing at over 752 metres (2,467 ft). You will notice it's white in appearance and has a near perfect conical shape. The white appearance is a result of the extensive amounts of scree on the slopes.
Errigal dominates the landscape and valley. It provides a dramatic backdrop to the shallow peat valley, subdivided by low dry stone walls, which follow you to Dunlewy. Errigal is steep and needs great care, particularly on descent, but the views are really breathtaking on every side. Access to the uppermost peak is via a narrow goat track where the ground falls away sharply on either side. If you have a poor head for heights be content with the lower ridge. The summit ridge offers views over Glenveagh National Park, the Poison Glen, and on a clear day Tory Island, off the north west coast.

Walked accross the Blue Stacks in Donegal for my gold duke of ed, but that was in 03 or so and can't really remember the scenery as I was busy breathing out my hoop, very nice and wild. From what I remember theres a youth hostel and small village near the foot of Errigle, never went up it though  :(

I have climbed and cooked on top of this summit many times. The walk in is the hardest over boggy peat and heather terrain but once you hit the rock its plain sailing and a very pleasant climb. I may be up for doin this again. NeilB and i done it a few years back with another mate in winter with gusts up 60mph and driving snow at the top. I have never experienced anything like it in my life we got caught on the top in the cloud and had to climb into the stone cairn just below the summit and get the gas stove out to get a brew and some hot food in us. Was hairy for a while and we made a hasty retreat as soon as we got a break in the cloud. Heres a pic of us on the way down

Me on the left (well covered) & NeilB

You can see the cloud behind us, this was about half way down and normally you would have a class view over lough altan which lies between mt. errigal and mt. aghla mhor to the north east

Regards,

David

Breath taking, jaw droping stuff. I could look at that picture all night, and maybe even live at the top of it in a woody hut with a peat burner. That the life boys.
