Slievelamagan summit camp -Sat 12/10/13
« on: October 10, 2013 »

Hi folks, just to confirm that myself and Rumblebum have planned a wee camp for this Saturday night on Slievelamagan.  Weather is looking pretty good with a High Pressure forecast.

I thought I'd give this its' own topic so you can pitch in if you would like to join us, and we can know who to expect - or look for if they don't arrive  :o

Being pretty central there are a few ways to get there.  We are going to approach from Carricklittle via Lower Cove>Cove Lough>Cove Mountain.  We are hoping to get up there for sunset, about 7:30pm ish.

Plenty of other options starting at Donard Park, Bloody Bridge, Meelmore Lodge etc.

Alas, I have family commitments this weekend. Shame, I can't even remember when I last had any sort of proper mountain camp.

Yeah man that's me, I drank some wine up there to celebrate.

I think Whorya's got three left to go, Meelbeg, Binnian and Donard, he didn't have the bottle when we did it. ;)

Sitting round the fire last night we started to count up the different areas in the mournes that each one of us has camped, it's a close contest!

Another brilliant night out, on what is one of the more difficult mountains to camp.

Weather was to be dry and it stayed so all night, unfortunately though the mountain was enveloped in mist which remained the case until the early hours of the morning.

First view (of part) of Slievelamagan

Having ascended by a nice route taking in Lower Cove we reached the summit of Slievelamagan just as darkness set in.

It was surprisingly tough to find suitable places with enough room for all three of us to bivvy.  Right on the summit was less desirable since the wind was fairly strong, and it doesn't take long after dropping off the summit for the terrain to become very steep.  The mist reduced visibility greatly and made our head torches quite ineffective at lighting up much of the ground in front of us.

Eventually our endeavours paid off and we found a spot.  The rocky terrain however offered no end of great places to cook dinner and pass the evening around a fire log.

First view in the morning.

Home for the night

After breakfast we took a dander down towards 'lamagan's south-most projection, at the top of the slabs, where Fred showed us a really interesting formation in the rock face.

As the sun filled the valleys it was hard not to be slightly jealous of those heading in the opposite direction as we made our way back to the car.

I thoroughly enjoyed myself, it was another great night on a mountain. On the way up it was tempting to seek out a lower and more sheltered spot but I'm glad that we got to the summit. Firelogs are brill, even if they are a pain to carry up.

Thanks to Rumblebum and WhoRya for making this a great outing.
