New Member Louise and 2013 Mourne 7 7s
« on: August 06, 2013 »

Hi,

My name is Louise.  I am 39 and love to get outside.  I hike, run and cycle.
I have just found this fantastic website.  I am researching the Mourne Seven Sevens which I hope to complete this Sat 10th Aug.
Very recently I completed the 3 Peak Challenge across the water.  Now I have set my sights to a new challenge closer to home.
I am in Newcastle most weekends.

I am a bit nervous of this challenge.  It is not to be underestimated.  No matter how fit you are.  Also my navigation skills are beginner level.

Is there anyone out there who would let me tag along or help me with my navigation?  I am generally no bother and always positive.  (famous last words..)

Seriously, any help\advice gratefully received.

Many thanks,
Louise

Welcome Louise, I'll be tacking the 7 7s too, feel free to tag along although I have a habit of not finishing ;D  Navigation not too much of a problem, tricky bit is going from Meelbeg to Ben Crom if misty (as I found out to my error  :( ) I'll be using a GPS this year though  ;)  There's a few threads here about it already with some more advice

Welcome along Louise.

I think there's a few from the forum doing the 7 7s this year, it's normally quiet easy to find your way at the start of the walk as there's such a big group of people doing it, but it can get tricker as the day goes on, especially if the weather closes in, hopefully your able to team up with someone.

If not, study and plan your route, there's also a lot of marshals that can help you.

Good luck and enjoy. :)

Hi,
I thought I had the route sussed.  I have plotted my route - Donard, Commedagh, Bearnagh, Meelmore, Meelbeg, Binnian then Lamagan.  Is this wise?
I will be at Greenhill YMCA at 7am.  Hope to see you there.

Many thanks,
Louise

There is only really 2 choices of route, the way you are doing it and I think the runners have to do your route this year too, and the way I am going to do it which is the first 2 the same and then the other 5 the opposite way round. I dont think there really is much difference, at the end of the day you have the same amount of climbing to do each way. I just dont like Lamagan from the binnian side and I think it is easier to pick a good route up from ben crom dam to meelbeg than finding a good route down. We intend starting at 7 too, thats me in my profile pic, if you see us come and say hello.

Stick with your route choice Louise, most people will do the same route so its easy to follow people. I might not be able to take part now  :(  I went up Commedagh yesterday evening to stretch the legs and my old ankle injury has flared up  >:(  will see how I feel sat morning but it usually takes 1-2 weeks to fix itself. I would be starting around 9am anyway.

Great Stuff!
Thank you all very much and for the advice and welcome messages.
I too have had ankle trouble, but all good at the minute.  I cant recommend cold compress enough. aka RICE.
I cant wait, really looking forward to it.
See you there.

I'm thinking of doing an alternative route now, its called the No Sevens, and avoids every summit  :)

silly me, just spotted and even easier route, up the side of ben crom reservoir to the brandy pad

I will keep an eye out for you, hopefully you will make it up there.

Hi!
Just wanted to thank everyone for their responses.  I managed to complete the 7 7s in 10 hours.  I was absolutely shattered.  I stuck with the main route i.e. anti-clockwise.  The weather was perfect.  So all in all a very good day.
Thanks again,
Louise
