Goretex glove repair help?
« on: June 04, 2013 »

So I was out with the girlfriend and decided to be a gentleman and lend her my gloves. Unfortunatley, they ended up a little burnt.

So rather than shelling out on a new pair ( I've just spent too much on a new jacket and trousers) I'd thought a bit of Diy fixing might do.

Any ideas? The fix doesn't have to be breathable or even pretty, just waterproof.

there's the likes of Tenacious tape which is for repairing the likes of gore-tex. Think you apply heat to bond it on. Not sure how well it will work as an exterior repair, or how the wadding will react to the heat.

What brand are they? Most gloves have a waterproof inner, so this outer breach may not affect the 'gore-tex' bit at all. This is what I would suspect and could probably be covered by tougher 'wonder-web' type heat patch.

Only the likes of Black Diamond have started bonding their own proprietary membrane directly to the outer (to stop the slidey inner feeling and stop the insulation from wetting out).

Kombi, as far as I can tell.

Not sure if the waterproofing is compromised, but I do see white stuffing so don't want to test it till I get it sowed up. Might seal with varnish or some silicon sealant.

We shall see how it goes!

I repaired a sleeping bag with Tenacious Tape (from Cotswolds). It just stuck on, no messing required and it seems to have stuck fast even through stuff sack stuffing. That said, I'm not sure how it would work on the tips of the fingers since they see a lot of action.

I think I'll start with a needle and thread, then maybe clear nail varnish over the stitching.

Looks like a nylon outer. I'd start by trying to sew in a small shaped patch of nylon on each finger to cover the hole and keep the insulation safe. I wouldn't opt for nail narnish, it will dry out hard and brittle and crack off. A great product for sealing and finishing the repair would be a tube of 'Aquasure'. Jacksons sell it for about £6 a tube. It's a flexible polyurethane waterproof adhesive/sealant and will last for a long time. It sticks like sh*t to a blanket. I use it regularly at work for repairs like this and its up there along with duct tape & cable ties  ;D

The Goretex liner should be ok and still water tight. It wouldn't be bonded to the outer as the manufacturer has stitched this and that would only compromise the proofing.
