Harvey Mourne map
« on: May 22, 2013 »

Map producers Harvey have released a Mourne 125,Harvey are well known for their high standards & are used by all outdoor enthusiasts, until now the only Harvey i've used is one for the Macgillycuddy Reeks which I found quite easy to use.

At the moment I laid up with an ankle injury & spent a considerable time looking over the new Harvey map,so question is how does it fair up,well there's good & bad points.

Good points first- it's very user friendly,ie,its one sided easy to open, waterproof map,if you've never used the OS before you'll find the Harvey easy to read.the map features more up to date landscape such as Annalong wood.

Bad points-there's just too many things missing, well known land marks named on the OS are not on the Harvey, the shelter stone, the back castles, cove cave.other major features are also missing like the gully that follows the river under hares castle, rivers & indeedany water course is marked in a faded blue.another disappointing feature is how stiles are featured as a broken line,in fact there's lots of stiles missing.

Verdict- I'll be sticking with the OS,suppose it's what i'am used too,but I think it offers the user a greater depth of use, with detailed mapping.

Cheers MM I always wondered if I was missing something by sticking to the old faithful OS. Seems I'm not :)

The photo that they used on the front is at least 15 -20 years old. I recognize the bearded guy as a friend of mine. I know that I am at the bottom at the Hare's Gap. it was taken at the first Wee Binnian Walking Festival, I think. Sorry to hear about your injury, MM, get well soon.

Aye it looks sparser, and the contour lines are different intervals I think. Although some common known features are not named as you say, it does look more updated regarding paths (or lack there-of) and cleared forest etc.

Haven't used it up the hills yet, but it's what the Mourne Mountain Marathon will be using this year, so that's at least 150 will be sold for that (effectively adding £10 to entry). Still, my OS is coming apart and rubbed thin on folds so I needed a new map! Will see how it fares.

I have Harvey's maps for Skye and the West Highland Way and they do a good job.

A helpful review, thanks. Never knew about these maps. I have the OS 1:25000 but will probably get this one cos I like maps.

'cept you won't know you are looking at Annalong Wood since it doesn't name it.

On the first picture I noticed several things missing like Blaeberry Mountain and Long Mountain (both on the side of Chimney Rock) and even the Lamagan Slabs.  From a navigational point of view the absence of these may well make the Harvey map better, letting you focus on the physical features more.  But if you're like me and you enjoy spending time looking at the mountains, even just at the map, and putting names to the places and features then you'll miss some of that information.

Got this map. I'm pleased with it and it's a helpful addition but if I had to pick one it'd be the OS 1:25000 one.
