Mournes Avalanche risk
« on: March 25, 2013 »

Hey folks, just thought Id give u a heads up there might be the risk of avalanches in some parts of the mournes. Climbed the North west side of Cock Mountain and noticed that some very heavy cornices had formed below the eastern cairn and on the slopes above the road up to Spelga dam. The snow is extremely firm at the minute because of the cold but there were already several very large blocks of snow that had separated from the main mass and slid down the slope a short distance. I neglected to take pics as I was in too much of a rush to get out of the howling wind! Reckon these areas could get dodgy when/if a thaw comes.

Thanks!

I heard reports of an avalanche on Bernagh so we should all be careful out there!

Here's a view of the area today, but too far away to see the cornices
