Back in Boots
« on: February 19, 2013 »

Had an outstanding day in the Mournes today with Spud, for some time now i've been planing on assending Binnain via Blue lough buttress & Douglas crag.Spud collected me at 6am & we arrived at our starting point Carricklittle a liitle before 7am.

Armed with our head torches we trekked up as far as Percy Byysshe  with dawn approching  behind us.Our plan was to spend our day taking in these new features & do as much navigating as possible, have to say Spud done excellent at navigating, given simple instructions he was able to take & follow compass  bearnings, grid references.

We contoured our way above Blue lough buttress with impressive views of Buzzards roost & Douglas crag & noted a number of great wild camping spots. As soon as we entered Annalong valley we were aware of the works going on the the North tor trail on Binnain so our assend towards the Back castles had to be on steeping ground that we had planned as we did not want to cause any trouble for the helicopter pilot, reaching the Back castles we stopped for a brew before the easy climb onto Binnains summit tor,the views today were simply breath taking.

Next it was down the very steep descend of Binnians south face towards Wee Binnian which in fact is quite the scramble in places & not for the faint of heart. After a quick break we climbed onto Wee binnian which is a super wee hill surrounded on three sides by cliffs.

Now down of Wee Binnian we contoured back across Binnian towards the disused miners village & quarry where we seen a Kesterl catching some prey, crossing some farmland we arrived back at Carricklittle eight hours later having had a truly inspiring trek in the wonderful Mournes.

That was a peach of a day, there are some advantages of working shifts - making us 9 to 5ers jealous.

Nice wee dander, good to see the pics, especially up rounf the buttress.  I've never been there.  Wee Binnian is an interesting feature alright.

Cheers for sharing.
