Your Favourite Mountain
« on: February 04, 2013 »

Hi All,

I run a website in my spare time and am running a poll to find Ireland's favourite Mountain. Current leader is Hungry Hill in the Beara Peninsula with Croaghaun of Achill Island and the mighty Errigal in 2nd and 3rd respectively.

If you have a spare moment, would appreciate if you could cast your vote. Donard is the highest of the Mournes in 7th place (my favourite in the Mournes would be Binnian).

Poll is at: http://www.walkingandhikingireland.com/cast-your-vote-for-your-favourite-irish-mountain/

It sort of defeats the purpose. Vote for your favourite mountain as long as its one of these. 8)

Binnian!
Commedagh is a close second, as its views are also pretty good

Ok folks,

By popular demand, both Doan and Slieve Commedagh have been added to the list.

Doan is the only one of the main mountains in the the Mournes that I haven't been up. Got to rectify that situation soon!

Yeaa. Thanks Paul its not Doan its self its the views from it that give the appreciation of the grander scale of the surrounding mountains kind of makes you feel very small standing on it.

Interesting point, what does make a great mountain. Is it the view from afar? An enjoyable route to the summit? An interesting summit? Or the views from the summit?

Had this discussion recently. Working on a series of articles on the 'Iconic Mountains of Ireland' and got speaking about what makes an Iconic Mountain.

For me, it's a mixture of things. Aesthetics are definitely important - mountains like Errigal, Croagh Patrick, Ben Bulben, Muckish look superb from ground level and draw you in. The walk itself is also important. Then you have the views from the summit - again the views from somewhere like Errigal or Slievemore in Achill are stunning and add to the whole experience.

Covered 4 mountains so far and each have the above attributes to different levels.
