slieve bernagh today (11/11)
« on: November 11, 2012 »

anyone know what was going on on bernagh today, there was close to 100 people in what appeared to be organised/guided tours (3 separate groups) . really didnt think there was THAT sort of demand for guided tours/walks. seemed to be 2 lots coming from meelmore lodge and one group from the next carpark up.

also , there's two memorial stones on the way up trassey, one for darragh, one for jude, can anyone shed any light on the stories behind them?

No idea about the memorial stones though.

ah it all becomes clear.

so the moral of this story, is check the weebinnians site before choosing a walk on any given sunday, if you go out to get away from noise, people, etc and like a bit of peace up in the mournes!!! lol

def 2 groups of 35 odd people and 1 of 20+. from a distance 1 man had a kilt on , so i thought at least one group COULD have been scottish tourists. never seen anyone in the mournes with a kilt on

the other thing if weebinnians vcould have 80 odd people on bernagh and people on binnian, how many of them is there? ??

Could of been tourists over for Remembrance Sunday. From the Wee Binnians website "Currently we have in excess of 275 members".

There was a wedding on in the slieve donard hotel on Saturday with loads of men running about in kilts. Maybe they were out to clear the head on Sunday!

There is a memorial at the end of the forest beside the trassey track. It is dedicated to a youngster who fell out of a tree at that spot and was tragically killed.
The accident happened perhaps ten years ago.

I can shed a wee light on this. Yes, the Wee Binnians were out and no, it isn't a tourist walk with paid guides (I wish). The guides or leaders are trained through the Wee Binnans and are not paid. There were 3 groups, Groups A, B and C. Sometimes the B group splits into two. I was in the third group (The C Group) and all we did was Bearnagh. The other groups did different routes.

i met a few of the wee binnians today, but they were going up big binnian !
As regards Landyliam seeing Wee Binnian members up Slieve Binnian, they were a group of Wee Binnian members out on their own on an unofficial walk.

We have up to 250 members and thankfully they don't all come out. I think we had a 100 members out last Sunday. Unfortuntely, we are a victim of our own success. There was 35 in the C group.

As regards the the Scottish Kilt, that is an event that one of our members organises annually. It is called The Brave Heart Challenge. Here are the details. It might interest some of you. It is open to anyone who is fit. It is self lead another words you have to be able to navigate your way. I would suggest you ring the telephone number that is shown before you join them.  http://www.weebinnians.com/?p=1128

Hopefully that clears up everything.
