kindle fire
« on: September 24, 2012 »

No its nothing to do with campfires :)  i'm actually thinking of getting one of these new fangled kindle fire things. Basically i want something that i can read books with and use as a sort of reference library, also do a little surfing on forums and social networks, display photos, and maybe make the odd spontaneous ebay purchase  8)  Is this the sort of gadget i need? I don't think I need to go to the expense of an ipad (athough they are tempting). So any gadget freaks out there have any advice on this, or is there another device i should consider?

I don't have one but I've used a few and they're pretty nice. They'll hold plenty of books and have a great battery life and weigh fairly little. You can also put on books you haven't actually purchased through Amazon and there is a massive number of royalty free out of print books floating around. The downside with the original greyscale screen Kindles was that they weren't great for books with pictures/graphics but the new Fire appears to be colour with a better screen resolution, it might be much improved.

I'd try and find a highstreet shop selling them that will let you have a play and go and give one a feel.

Oops, for some reason i though the fire model had 3G, but it only has wifi, and i was looking for something i could use a bit more out and about, maybe even in the hills. So now considering the black & white 3G model  ???

I don't think that the standard Kindle is up to much for web surfing, they don't have the screen resolution.

I totally love my kindle, but I only use it to read books. I don't think it would be very good for the net.

Same here, I have an ordinary one but would never dream of using it for the web. I would use my phone first as I am doing now.

I don't have a web phone so thats why i'm think of having some web access might be useful. have just spotted another device that might suit, the blackberry playbook.

but i've edging towards the kindle as it has the text to speech converter, and i do a lot of long drives so that might be handy, or would the digitized voice get on my nerves after a while?
