wee dander in Donegal
« on: August 31, 2012 »

Took a walk to Errigal at the weekend,  it's quite a busy mountain and the ground leading up to the base of the mountain shows this by presenting a boggy path.  There is definitely a case for some conservation path work to be done here.

I should have taken more photo's, in this one you can see the damage done by peat cutting which is usually a sign it will be a damp boggy area.

If you ever want to climb Errigal you can avoid this boggy path by following the river bank,  and go when there will be less people (bank holiday weekend was a bad idea  :))

The heather gives way to a well worn path and scree slopes on Errigal.

Some nice views from here.

Unfortunately we didn't summit due to my walking partners head for heights (or lack of  ;D).  Should have taken some pic's of where we made it to.

I could literally see people summiting and it did cross my mind (if just for a second) i could scoot up and down in 30 minutes while they wait ;D.
Of course i didn't do this and i edged back down the scree sideways holding their hands while they fixed their eyes on the floor.

I can totally understand this feeling, i get it sometimes especially when it is windy and exposed. :-[

I have climbed Errigal a lot and yes, the path up to it is very boggy. As you say it needs work done on it. Nice mountain though. Pity you didn't gey to the top.

Here is a video of our club walking up Errigal in 2009

Not to make you feel bad but that mountain is covered in cloud half the time, I'd have completely understood if you had've charged on up to the summit.  Nothing like a hill-walking partner who doesn't like heights to spoil a good day out  :D

;D I had planned on doing it solo and checked the weather to see if i would get a clear view on the summit (it turned out a great day), but they wanted to come at last minute so proceeded as planed and decided to turn around if they didn't want to continue.

Thanks for sharing FlapJack.

 :)

I've been up a few times myself. Once on a very windy morning, which is quite an experience up top! Did it early one summer and we had the place to ourselves until we were almost back down again. Fantastic views.

Not everyone was thrilled by the controversial plaque at the top. I wonder if it's still there.

Watched the video D. Looks like you all had a good time and worked up an appetite.
