I like the idea of the visitors centre being revamped.. Newcastle needs more outdoor shops.

Isn't Drinnahilly the hill in Donard Forest that the radio/tv mast sits on?

Its one of these things.. "Oh I have a good idea, lets make everywhere accessibile to everyone. And we could even find a way to make money out of it."

I personally dont think everywhere should be easily accessible, be it mountains, forests or lakes. We dont have an awfully big country, so there is little enough space left where you cant see the impact of humans.

So personally I'd be against this.

first thing I did when I read that was to check the date at the top.
Maybe they meant to publish it this Sunday.

You are making it out as if I was saying "Oh wait everyone who is disabled isnt allowed to look at the mournes."

Its not something that is being took away, it hasnt been there before. What you dont have you dont miss.

Eveyone can see the beauty, disablled people could put most of us to shame. Even old people have run me out of a football game lol.

I like beauty untouched by machines i guess.

I think thats a bit different than building a million pound escalator up a mountain. People enter shops to buy food to eat, not to look at the views, thats the difference I see.

I never said I intentionally rejected the idea so that disabled people would  miss out. I said I rejected the idea because I felt that some places should just be left as they are, no matter how many people cant get there.

Lets start make plans for a multi-billion pound space escalator to the moon, I'm missing out on the views, something needs to be done about this.

I wouldn't have a problem with that... it's not even going above the tree-line: not as if it is going to the top of Donard or something.

Cable cars are wonderfully efficient inventions and can be set-up and removed with minimal impact on the ground, and are very quiet in operation. They're not even that intrusive.... ok, the Alps are a bit bigger than the Mournes, but there are massive cable cars all over and you hardly notice them in the landscape. Someday they could maybe even link Drinahilly to the Drinns and down into Tollymore?!

How many of us have enjoyed looking over Ben Crom reservoir or Spelga Dam? or thanked the Wall for shelter or guidance in bad weather? or the easy access of the Brandy Pad?
All man-made. Whose level of assistance is where you draw the line? Personally, I'd like the Mournes to be covered in natural forest as they were thousands of years ago, but many would object to that. Man has already abused or used the landscape; I think a little gondola system is not the worst of it. Something that gives people a different perspective can be a good thing.

Saying that, you'll not find me using it  ;D
