Coves,Caves,& Gullys
« on: March 11, 2012 »

Mountain goat,David, craigy ,pals,& Myself had another fun filled day in Annalong valley.Bit of a late start as craigy had to leave his car in for service,so we spend the time waiting by getting a few Geocaches.Craigy & company arrived about 11.30 & we set off up the Carricklittle trek, still no concrete plans but we had an idea to do some caving & scrambling, with that in mind we made our way pass the end of Annalong wood & across the valley towards Cove cave, from past experience I knew how tight of a squeeze it was coming out ,so while the rest of the guys disappeared into the darkness david & myself scramble up the gully onto Lower cove.
Observed some climbers on Lower cove buttress, using a guide one of the climbers shouted up were the next hold was found ,pretty cool stuff. Now above the ere Cove cave came out we watched the guys squeezing themselves out the small gap & into daylight.Another wee scramble up onto lower cove & time for lunch.Having spotted a nice looking gully from slieve Donard last week,we made our way towards Cove mountain.Standing at the bottom of the gully looking up I wondered to myself is this really a good idea?Straight away our group splintered with the young fitter guys taking the lead. The gully itself ran right to the top & was made up of loose stones & slippery rocks, thinking myself wise I climbed along the edge using my hands like shovels digging them into the earth to wedge myself upward. Not that I’ve ever done much scrambling but at times it got a wee bit hairy,so caution to anyone else considering trying Cove gully, take your time,do it with a least one other walker & take your time. After about an hour David & myself finally reached the top. From Coves summit we made our way up Lamagan, which I consider the cheating way to walk the tough mountain, steep descent down to the Lamagan ,Binnian col them back down the Carrick little trek to Percy blithe caves,as some of the guys had never been inside before. At the point my mind wandered  at how stuck Craigy could get himself today, reaching the caves we met a fellow geocacher who asked me to drop of a travel bug for him.Having been in the caves quite a lot recently I waited outside while the other guys scrambled inside. After ten minutes I hear some shouting for inside the caves,Craigy who is always pushing the boundaries had got himself wedged upside down in a lower cavern,in all fairness to him, there was no panic, he just slowly twisted himself round & somehow was able to get himself back.Having survived the caves we sat outside while Craigy told his story f how he was following a beam of light,we searched around the entrance & indeed found the source of light, too which we thought would fit a bag of spuds throught.Having tired ourselves out we made our way back down the Carricklittle trek to the awaiting car,a good day out with plenty of scrambling, caving, hiking & a bit of geocaching, 10.9 miles distance.

Is the main gully that you climbed up on Cove visible in this picture?  Is it that big one?

Looks like a fantastic day out guys! I'd have been there but work needs me to be within an hour of a PC at all times as I'm on call this weekend.

Photos are absolutely fantastic

At one point I thought it was going to be the sequel to 127 Hours. I kid you not....I really was stuck and I really was evaluating my life. Please do not attempt to get though a hole the is clearly too small. All in all a fantastic day. And a really exciting and eventful route. Cheers to everyone who went.
