Back / Neck Problems and Pain
« on: August 11, 2011 »

I've been seeing a physio since I knackered my back (stupidly) lifting a canoe. It's been annoying me for a while and now I've developed some neck pain too. Nothing seems too wrong, most of it is probably inactivity and old age but I'm wondering if anyone else has back issues?

i used to get my my fair share of back issues, usually from lifting heavy farm gates and i do a LOT of driving too, changing the car to one with decent lumbar support in the seat helped immensely, then getting fitter over the last year helped even more, still get the odd twang when lifting the wrong way (or carrying 18kg up donard  ;D ) but pain is usually gone in a day or two (before it sometimes lasted weeks)

I injured my back years ago (landed on my head too many times doing back somersaults!). Never fixing it properly in the first place combined with years of manual labour and now working on uneven ground means its a long term issue. I tried numerous physios, chiropractors, masseuers. I got short term relief but was never happy. After the last flare up I found a new chiropractor. She is brilliant, fixed me in no time. I now see her every 6 weeks just to maintain the great feeling. I can now do stuff that would have killed me before. Can pass on her details if you want.

What does your chiropractor actually do for you that helps? I'm a bit suspicious of them since chiropractic is an alternative medicine based on some pretty odd ideas. I have however heard that their manual adjustments can help but I've also heard of them doing more damage.

The reason why your neck is sore is due to bad posture,This is probably due to having the sore back.
If you are in pain you tend to slump. Best thing to help with back and neck problems would be to start swimming. It will help strengthen the back.

It was something that I was very unsure of too because I'd also be suspicious/completely disbelieving of a lot of alternative medicine. All I know is that this woman works. I know a number of her clients who she's fixed too. A normal session is anything from 5-20 minutes, basically its lots of clicking and cracking. All I know is I tried lots of people and she works for me.

I have m.e and also have back pain due to falling down the bank of a river and fracturing D12 or something in my spine. The best thing I can suggest for back pain is the cat posture stretch. Google it and you'll see pictures. I just do it when the pain is worse but I do know of many people who has also been to a different girl who's from Larne and she works wonders.

If you are looking for some relief from back pain then check out Biofreeze.  My dad recently had bad back pain just before he was due to go away on holiday.  A last minute visit to a physio in Bangor and they sorted him out with a massage and a big tube of Biofreeze.  Worked wonders for him.  I gave it a try on a muscle injury not so long ago and it definitely helped relieve the pain.  Particularly useful for me as many muscle rubs contain ibuprofen which I cant use as I have a history of asthma.  This is the first rub I've found that doesnt contain ibuprofen that is effective.

Hey Redleader.
I'm a musculoskeletal physio and I spend most of time dealing with necks and backs.
You are most likely right that there is nothing nasty going on;  95% of back pain is just due to some irritation of some of the dozens of sensitive structures in your back/ neck.  With the vast majority of back or neck pain hurt does not equate to pain.

Obviously I'm going to be biased but I much prefer the typical physio approach of treat, fix,  teach and discharge over any other health professional who endorses longterm management.  No denying that different things work for different people.

From a pure 'evidence' point of view the 3 things that should help back pain are 1) manual therapy 2) exercise prescription 3) acupuncture (growing evidence for this!)

I'd be happy to see any ni-wilders at a discounted 'club rate' if you can make it to the metropolis of Lurgan.

I'd agree, physio seems to be the best plan all round, I'm no fan of alternative medicine, if there was evidence they wouldn't call it alternative  ;D Though I'd like to see any evidence for Acupuncture. Every double blinded study I've heard about shows nothing better than placebo.

I hear good things about Yoga from the perspective that it helps keep you loose and agile.

I would highly recommend Acupuncture. My physio has used this form of treatment on me and I definitely noticed a reduction with pain.

I've had serious lower back problems and then broke my neck on top of things, bit of nerve damage etc etc, but the best thing that helped my back was kayaking because it stretched out all the ligaments that had become compacted riding, canoeing and generally getting about. The lower back is completely fixed after 20 years lol. The neck is in pretty good shape as Ive developed a fairly good muscle tone round it to keep things safer.

Physio was terrible for me- more pain for less benefit,
Acupuncture was horrendous- 2 week hospital stay less than 12 hours following session,
Osteopath gave relief but didn't fix anything,
Swimming nearly put me back in hospital with more neck problems

The best solution is learning to do a variety of core exercises to maintain strength from all angles of the weakened area. And never too much of one particular type without the corrective
After 20 years of painkillers I don't take any now  :)
