I just happened to watching an old episode of Ray Mears' Extreme Survival on Dave the other night, and it was about a similar situation with a couple stuck in the outback of Austrailia.  Obviously totally different environmental circumstances, but a similar outcome.  The couple both tried to walk out for help, but when the man couldn't go any further he returned to the vehicle whilst his partner pushed on.  The man was eventually found at the vehicle and survived, but the woman who walked on for help never made it and died en route. 

The constant advice is "always stay with your vehicle" but I did wonder how long you would actually stay with your vehicle before you decided it was either starve to death at the vehicle, or die trying to get out.  This story definitely backs up the advice that you should always, always stay with the vehicle.
