Hello NI-WILD!!!
« on: March 28, 2011 »

Hello all,

Noobie here. I was recomended this site by my kayaking/fishing buddy, as I'm into the out doors and plan to do a few trips this year, here in our own backyard.

I'm not a local originally, so I've only been to the Morns, Loch Neagh, and a wee bit around the north coast but haven't done any wild camping in NI as of yet - but that's why I'm on here now.

Please let me know if you can recomend any areas that I may not of been to yet, as I'm sure there's plenty of decent wild spots to explore without having to travel more than a hundred mile from Belfast.

Cheers,

Dusk

Welcome Dusk.

It depends on what you want to do. Walking / camping / canoeing etc.

The Mournes are our biggest mountain range and have plenty to do but you'll need to put a bit of legwork in to get up and over. The Antrim Hills and Sperrins are nice and the North Coast / Giants Causeway area has plenty to see and do. If you're into watersports we have no shortage of loughs and rivers worth paddling.

Where are you from originally?

Originally I'm from Runcorn - of Two Pints of Lager and a Packet of Crisps fame, but having lived in Scotland too and as a kid traveled the Peak and Lake District and even Snowdonia while on holiday, I'd say I'm not afraid of a bit of leg work and love to rough it  ;)

I'll check out the Antrim Hills in a mo, and I've a mate who wants to take his kid star gazing in a month or two, and I think we'll hit the Morns for that.

I trail run on the cave hill when I can, and I'm just breaking in my new pair of Vibram Treksports for a summer of hiking  ;D

Co-incidentally we were in the Mournes trying some Astrophotography on Sat night and it had mixed results. The Newcastle side suffers badly from light pollution, the Meelmore Lodge side is probably much better.

Cheers for the info. I hear the Sperrins are a bit more out of the way and from google maps, looks like there'd be less light pollution there.
