Making Scotland's Landscape
« on: November 15, 2010 »

Very interesting programme on BBC2 last night called "Making Scotland's Landscape".  It's a multi-part series and the first episode was entitled "Scotland's Trees" and includes an interview with a fella from Backwoods Survival School.  Well worth a watch if you missed it and have a passion for Scottish landscape, or indeed any wooded landscape for that matter!

Quote
Professor Iain Stewart presents a landmark five-part series in which he reveals how Scotland's unique and beautiful landscape has been shaped over the centuries.

In this first programme, he uncovers how, over thousands of years, the actions of mankind and the climate nearly led to the downfall of Scotland's trees and forests. It was only in the 18th century that man realised the extent of the damage to timber stocks, and measures were taken to re-populate the landscape. The impact was profound, but not everyone agreed with the results.

PS: I'm not sure if this programme is a repeat or not, as there are already four episodes available on iPlayer.  It's new to me anyway!

It was first shown on BBC Scotland a while back. Patrick McGlinchey from Backwoods is a Top guy and one of the finest Bushcraft Instructors in the UK. I've been fortunate enough to have seen some of his crafts first hand and they are works of art.
