Gaiters - Recommendations?
« on: October 02, 2010 »

I need to get a set of gaiters and would appreciate any advice offered.  I'd ruled out anything under £15 as probably not offering adequate breathability.  I had a look on the Tiso/Cotswold sites and reckoned I had settled on the Trekmates Cairngorm Gore-tex set.

However a last quick serach for reviews threw this up>

They got totally slated!  Perhaps I'm a little naive about how much I need to spend.  I'd like a durable pair and as mentioned before I want to keep my trousers dry not sweat like a good 'un!  A couple of other features seem to be whether zip or velco, likelihood to tear, and quality of under boot strap.

Particularly if buying online there seems to be quite a few different makes out there, so I'd be interested in what you have found that is good.  I'm not planning on becoming an Alpinist any time soon either.

Thanks in advance (that's the bit put in to make you feel bad if you don't respond ;)).

I have a pair of cheap Trekmates ones that are not breatheable and I think they're fine. Its just not an area people sweat alot.

I have a pair of Rab gaiters, fully breathable (e vent) in red. They are a size large, brand new, never worn. You can have them for a few quid. I got them ages ago but they are a bit too big for me.

That would have been good, although I'm not the tallest myself.  I was talking to a guy in a shop today about the same height as me and he said he wore a Small/Medium size.

I'll second the Trekmates gaiters - I picked up a pair in TK Maxx for around £5-10 and they've been great so far.  I had a pair of Trespass gaiters which were just awful (like a sauna for your legs), but the Trekmates are surprisingly breathable.

Mind you, I tend to avoid wearing gaiters unless its really foul weather!  Just more faff and hassle :)

Funny, once I have them on I tend to forget they're there.

So do I... until I manage to get the toggle at the top of the gaiters caught on something and near go head first over a stile ;D

Yeah, when you get the toggle caught and it pings back on the elastic it can make your eyes water :)
