Hello everyone, I have a son aged four and I want to introduce him to camping. For now I just want it to be the two of us with plenty to see and do within a four year olds limits. I'm trying to find a suitable starting location. I've searched the internet previously and until I found this website I couldn't find much info.
If someone could suggest somewhere from experience I would appreciate it. Not a million miles from Belfast and an items check list for one or two nights.

Tullymore or castlewellan would be a good place to start. Tullymore has some good walks and plenty of space for playing football or other games. Castlewellan has a good maze.

I'd give a vote for Meelmore Lodge too. It's a good family spot.
Just choose anywhere you can camp by your car you can just bring everything you might need.

I would ask around again about Meelmore Lodge. Check out a few more different posts.

From what I've read and heard, the boy racers seems to camp there at the weekends and have the music thumping until after midnight.

Certainly not the sort of place I'd be wanting to go camping with a young child in tow.

Camped at Tollymore several times with mine and can't praise Carnfunnock highly enough for camping with youngsters. (Been there and done it, so know the score).

The kids'll love it.

I've only stayed at Meelmore once and there were a few groups of kids about but the owner said they had relaxed the rules as there'd been a big concert in Newcastle the night before. He said as a general rule it's families only. Though first time out I suppose a more organised campsite where you can get leccy etc might be better.

Thanks everyone for the great advice, I can see tollymore as a good starting point. I'll make sure I post updates and photos as we adventure into the wild for the first time, can't wait. Thanks again. What a great site.

i'd be interested to know what sleeping bag etc ppl have used for kids...

my brother has a little lad of 3.5yrs and is keen to take him camping for a night or two but only a bit worried about the cold this time of year... anyone any experience?

he'd take him to a campsite somewhere.
