New sperrin access
« on: May 24, 2014 »

HAd a good phone call with one of the chaps from the NWMRT today. I saw on their facebook page that the team had taken over the old Sperrin heritage center and so asked about the public using the car park. Paul from the team contacted me and I gave him a ring this morning, he told me that they more than welcome folks to use the car park as the bollards will not be locked in place, so they can just be lifted out.

At least two walking groups have made similar inquiries and had the same response. Paul informed me that pretty much anyone is welcome to come and use the car park at anytime, and he just asked that they firstly contact the NWMRT  so they can be made aware of the intended use, and that the bollards are place back in their holes once you have parked up. He did also mention that if the team are doing anything at the center at the time then folks are more than welcome to come and say hello.

He did tell me that you do not need to put any kind of notice in your car of who you are or what you are doing, but I think it would be prudent to do so and just good manners. Finally he never mentioned anything about any cost for using the car park (Although I forgot to ask), but again I reckon it would only be good manners to make a donation to the NWMRT as way of a parking payment.

Overall I think it's a great thing to happen to the area and opens up access to the Sperrins massively, as prior to this you had one of three choices.

1. Arrange or ask a local if you can leave you car on their drive and hike up a road some way.
2. Find a lay by as near as possible to the area you wish to walk in and hope it is still there when you get back.
3. Find an old farm track with space at the end to leave your car and hope the farmer who owns the track is of the friendly sort.
