Norh Face coats
« on: October 21, 2012 »

Quick question i hope some of you knowledgeable people out there can help me with......

Was given a job lot of stuff early in the summer by a retiring walker, some of the stuff is very old (circa 20 years). among the stuff was a north face goretex XCR jacket, summit series (it is either very old or has seen a LOT of wear). anyhow, ive been wearing the jacket this summer and think its the best jacket ive ever had on, and so intend to renovate it during the winter by re proofing and replacing all the elastics/drawstrings, etc. It has a double zip system on the front as if its designed for a zip in fleece, however ALL the zips are the opposite way around to my other north face coat, even the front one. is there a specific fleece for this particular jacket or did north face change their zip arrangement at some stage. it has the wee tabs in the sleeves again as if it was originally designed for a zip in fleece.

many thanks

As in, the zips are the way round we normally have them in this country?

Newer TNF stuff has American (girls) zips now with the puller on the right. Perhaps they once swapped them to match the UK standard for our market? If the zipper tooth size is the same (usually a YKK 3), any UK fleece like a Berghaus should zip in, or a newer TNF fleece will go inside out at a push.

tried turning a north face fleece inside out and zipping it in, didnt want to force the teeth, but it didnt appear that the zips were compatable. will try that again tonight.

aye, don't force it. It'll either work easily or not. The teeth may have a front/back so using 'the other side backwards' so to speak may not work. Might need a UK zip set up. Although, zips are a few quid: If you found one that matched you could sew a new zip into the fleece and convert it...if it's still good would be cheaper than £50 for a new fleece (if you want the zip in feature).

On YKK zips the number is on the bottom on the bit that joins the two sides...will help you order replacement with right size teeth. I look down and my wee HH hoody is a 5L (the L might mean the zip is on the left, but the 5 is the smaller teeth).

right, tried a berghaus fleece in and one side worked, one side didn't, there must be a wee difference in the zip sizes, with the berghaus zip not going into the north faxce zipper. ah well, God loves a trier, lol.
