Courses
« on: September 05, 2012 »

What courses are available in hiking, mountaineering etc? Who runs them? Are they nationally accredited?

I just do what I've picked up along the way and from reading books/online.  I'd like to take my knowledge to the next level. It might be nice to teach others too at some point and I'd rather tell them the right way than what I've picked up along the way.

This is something I want to do myself some time in the future. I wouldn't be able to do it now, I hear its ridiculously expensive.

Maybe others who have done one would be able to tell everyone a correct price?

Here's some links -

Some general info on the more advanced courses:
http://www.mountaineering.ie/trainingandsafety/viewdetails.asp?ID=44

The calendar for 2012 for Tollymore (Prices included):
http://www.tollymore.com/Calendar/Calender+of+Courses+2012.htm

The Mountain Leader Award looks like what I'm after though there seems a number of courses that are quite similiar.  You also appear to have to have some sort of record of days out in the mountain before you can do it.  I'll give Tollymore a buzz tomorrow and see what the craic is.

There's a Night Navigation couse the 3rd November that looks the business. Only £23.50.  I might have a go at that.
