Cheap camcorders for the hills
« on: July 22, 2011 »

I've been pondering getting some sort of solid state cheapy video recording device for trips. Would need to be cheap so I can lose/break it but have some sort of useful quality video. Does anyone have experience of such a thing?

Groupon had an offer for the Aiptek PenCam Trio HD Camcorder 720p but I've never heard of it.
The Groupon has finished but you can find it here:

I have the kodak Playsport. Great camera.

£120 ish (Could get cheaper online) (you buy cheap you buy twice ;))

Mine has been caving in January, on top of Kili & has been bouldering the other week. I has never failed. Records in HD. It's drop proof &  waterproof.

Probably far too late posting this, but I always liked the look of the Flip video cameras.  Super simple to use, relatively cheap, little to go wrong and the quality is meant to be superb.  As far as I know Cisco, who make the Flip, are dropping it from their range so you are bound to be able to pick up some clear out deals online.  That said the video quality is so good on compact cameras that I've never bothered to buy a standalone video device.  My Nikon P300 records very well in HD and I know Dowser was really impressed with the HD video quality of his LX5.  Alternatively you could always upgrade your Nikon DSLR to one with video... video capture on DSLR is just stunning :)

To be honest, I've still not bought one. There are a few about that get good reviews but I haven't gotten around to actually choosing one yet.

What did you go with in the end Redleader?
