Rusty Needs New Pants
« on: July 02, 2013 »

Looking at getting a new pair of outdoor trousers. My old craighoppers served me very well for a long time but they've taken too much abuse over too long a period.

Quite surprised by the array of trousers out there. Was quite taken by the 511 taclite trousers:
http://www.511tactical.com/All-Products/Pants/Tactical-Pants/Taclite-Pro-Pants.html

Only problem is tho that they're 65% Polyester and 35% poly cotton. Anyone used these type of trousers before or know if the 35% poly cotton will mean they don't dry out quickly?

If anyone's got a good pair they'd recommend getting feel free to share: it's a minefield of choices at the moment!  ???

I can recommend the montane terra pants. Superb breathability and dry in minutes. Big vents down the sides are great to. DWR finish. Reinforced knees and seat. Bit pricey but will worth it. Also 3 leg lengths.

Rusty,

What about a pair of Fjallraven Barents trousers?
These are VERY expensive, but after taking the plunge and buying a pair, I can't recommend these enough.
They're extremely durable and will probably out last myself.

If all else fails, you can always get another pair of Craghoppers - I have two and they're more than up to the task.

Have you considered a set of these? http://www.bushcraftuk.com/forum/content.php?r=556-Austrian-Army-Ripstop-Combat-Trousers They are poly/cotton again but bottom prices and sem to  be rated pretty well.

To side track slightly I have a set of craighoppers too but wonder if other folks suffer the same issue as me, The crotch seems to ride very low, this is fine when taking short/normal paces on the flat or downhill. But soon as I have to open my stride or start to climb they get very tight and pull turning from wonderful trousers into something akin to a £5 tesco job. I'm not sure if perhaps I got a size too big although I did match the label to my waist size as the one below felt a little snug. Anyone ever tried lifting the crotch and stitching it?

I've been wearing the same Craghoppers trousers for over 4 years. I bought them from TK Maxx and it's hard to fault them.

The Craighoppers I, like Jonno,  have been living in the last five years are the same 65%/35% poly cotton. They don't dry out as fast as lighter weight my Rab or my  (please don't judge me) Bear Gryles  100% polyamide trousers.

but in anything but the hottest day I prefer the poly cotton blend, seems harder wearing, keep you warmer...and love the bog map pocket..

I'm sure you can't compare the two....but instead of £50...why not £8  link :) got a pair recently, (morons sent the wrong size, but they look descent enough)

(Always on the search for 36" inside leg)

I was looking for walking trousers a while ago and yes there are loads out there.  In the end I just picked a pair off the shelf in the Tisos sale and went with them.  I got a pair of Columbia Silver Ridge pants.  So far I've been delighted with them, very comfy.
I also have Craghoppers Kiwis and I share both the positive and negative opinions already mentioned.  The do wear well and are all round good performers, but I do find that I'm always having to pull them up at the waist because the crotch is sitting low and is a little irritating between the thighs.  It is more of an issue walking in the rain with waterproofs on.

Montane terra's

I've owned a couple of different trousers I've used to walk in and I've found these the best I've owned. They've worn really well, are great both hot and cold days, shed a bit of water and dry really quickly when wet. They are light too and allow lots of movement without restriction ( I've worn them climbing)
I wore a pair for a week solid on the TGOC and they performed great.
