Preppers NI Programme
« on: June 11, 2013 »

Check out this programme featuring some fellas from Northern Ireland:

I know that I sometimes am pretty out there but I'm still scratching my head about these guys. They seem genuinely nice fellas with excellent fieldcraft by the look of it. But something dosen't sit well with the whole thing for me.

I'll have to give it a spin, it's something I'm interested in. I think there's a fine line with prepping that it's easy to cross. On one side there's being prepared for any sort of potential drama be it a flat tire in the dark or the apocalypse. On the other side there's the assumption that something is definitely going to happen soon and we're all doomed which is where the stranger element lies.

When someone wants to make a doco about preppers it would be boring if they picked a crowd of guys that casually learned bushcraft and self sustenance and had a bag in the car with essentials in case of emergency. It's always better TV if it's someone with a strange outlook who's turned it up to 11.

Had a watch there Rusty. You're right; they do all come across as nice guys, and I think eccentric is about as far as you'd go (rather than 'nut-job').

It was nice to see the positive spins, like the father and son bonding (even though the dad's not into it). I felt most of them were responding to issues already in their life, rather than paranoia about the future... stress, hopelessness/guilt feelings after seeing a car accident, fear for loved ones, being admired, being part of a 'tribe'... just bonding with others and having fun. Although different, I see it as constructive response to dealing with their feelings. It does no harm to anyone, and if nothing happens they still live with a degree of peace and security and enjoy themselves.

Personally, it's not an ideal I would accept for myself. Yes, I take a multi-tool and a spare tube when I go out on the bike, have first aid/some camp skills/savings etc that can be looked at as preparing... but it's a numbers game. You can spend your whole life preparing for a life that doesn't come, and miss the one you do get.
